Brad Bodily shows how to test the snow for stability and safety during an avalanche safety workshop. Snow From 9 blowing. One foot of snow spread evenly over a range isnt bad, but when wind is involved, it picks up the snow on the windward side and deposits it on the leeward side and can equal three feet. Cook From 9 Bonnie Kirkpatrick learned how to make a great corned beef dinner, but she broke from tradition because her family doesnt like cooked cabbage, which is most often served with it. In place of the cabbage she serves baked green beans or broccoli. I know what my family likes, so that is what I serve. They have really learned to love corned beef, but it used to be less expensive," she said. Even the dnnk with dinner is green. Lime punch is used with lemon and Sprite added to it. And eloserleaf scones are a great standby. The scones are made with grated cheese added to a biscuit-lyp- e dough. The dough is cut cookie with a small cutter. Three of the hearts are placed with the tips together to form a shamrock. And there is always some form of potatoes served for dinner. This is done because of the story of the Irish famine. In Ireland, the poor farmers grew potatoes to live on. When the potatoes got a disease and rotted in the ground, the people went hungry. Not because there was no food, because they did grow vegetables sold to England, but because they didn't have the money to buy the food. Many people died. A shillelagh, or walking slick, is always incorporated into the decorations. And the garland on the living room wall is decorated with shamrocks and leprechauns. A pot of gold coins (chocolate wTupped in gold foil) is left out for the grandchildren. The jolly face of the wooden, heart-shape- d Seniors From 9 quired. In the outdoor part of the class, students dig snow pits to look for weak layers. They look for graupel, which is snow like ball bearings. The snow is in rounded crystal form, and with a layer of snow on top, it is easily leprechaun smiles as it takes part in the festive decorations. The Irish Fairy is small tole-paint- and dresses with a cocked hat and an apron. According to the legend, they live alone and possess a hidden pot of gold. Another part of the family ritual is their own Blarney stone. During a family home evening the children were given the opportunity to spin their own blarney by telling tall tales or stories they had made up. The real Blarney stone is in the wall of the Blarney Castle in Ireland. Kissing the stone bnngs good luck, said Kirkpatrick. Kissing the real stone isn't easy. It is between the main castle wall and a parapet. If someone hangs backwards and downwards he or she can kiss the stone. But the Kirkpatrick Blarney stone isnt kissed. "I doesn't seem to bring the same kind of luck, Kirkpatrick said. Here are some of the Kirkpatricks recipes to help you celebrate St. Patrick Day. moved. The class members learn to do stability tests. They cut a block of snow long and a pole-lengwide and jump on it. It is an easy test to determine how weak the snowpack is. If it fails before you jump on it, it is a weak snowpack, he said. The jumper counts the number of jumps it takes to move the th th ded chcddar cheese 1 cup sour cream 124 cup vegetable oil 1 3 tablespoons milk In a large bowl, combine (lour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda; stir in cheese.
