Ste- ' phanie Ellison put coats on Colby and Kaleigh, and they went out back to play. The back yard is fenced and the pool has a cover on it, so I thought theyd be fine, Stephanie said. I planned to get a little work done on the computer while they played. Colby gets excited when he talks about his adventure with his sister that day. We decided to go ice skating on the pool, he said. Stephanie remembers Colby coming inside at one point and calling to her. She said shed be there in a minute. Then she heard the back door shut behind him again. Next thing I knew, Colby had his arm around his little sister and was bringing her inside. She was very upset and crying, Stephanie said. As she peeled her childrens wet clothes off them, she began to piece together what had happened. Neither of them had wet hair, but were wet and cold from the neck down, Stephanie said. Kaleigh was beet red as we pulled off her wet clothes. After a warm bath and being wrapped in warm towels, both children had forgotten their discomfort and were ready to go again. Layton Fire Chief Allan Peek said crews responded to northbound Interstate 15, a half mile south of Layton Hills Mall, around 8 28 p m. to a call of an abandoned vehicle on fire. Crews arrived to find a 1986 sports car with flames shooting out from under the hood. Peek said the vehicle had apparently broken down and had been abandoned by its owner. They believe the fire started around the carburetor. Firefighters had to fight the heat in an effort to pull the car's hood open in order to extinguish the fire. A while later crews managed to cool the situation off, but the vehicle was completely torched. UHP troopers managed to contact the cars owner in Clearfield. Damage was estimated at $40,000. .
