' For about a year now. Der-jell- 's Barber Shop here has been taking donations. It all started when barber A1 Thacker suggested to owner Der-re- ll Rudd that the shop get involved in the humanitarian cause. He said, Let's do it, Thacker recalls. He began approaching store owners about contributing sewing machines and materials. Last year, 72 sewing machines, 58 wheelchairs, crutches, 16 tons of clothing, about $7,000 in cash, a 1985 van with a wheelchair lift poverty- and various medical supplies were donated to the shop. Thanks to volunteered trucks ; and drivers from England Trucking and Pride Transport, the goods were taken to a warehouse in El Paso, Texas. From there, they were picked up by Ed Whet-te- n and other citizens of Colonia Juarez, a Mormon Church colony in Mexico that dates back to the 1880s. Whetten started a clinic of sorts for handicapped children some years ago. He took the donated sewing machines and set up a sewing center where mothers of the 320 children being toes, oranges, apples, bullion fend rice to feed 200 families for a month. It costs about $35 per family, he said. Three pallets of donated medical supplies were given to Mexican doctors in exchange for 1 1 surgical operations performed and six months of rent at the clin treated in the clinic earn money to pay expenses. Thacker tells stories of Uses he's seen touched in Mexico. One family of four lived in a house built of cardboard and had for furnishings only a bed and table with a chair and a box scooted up to it. Two blankets rested on the bed and a pipe led - the stove -from a out through the roof. "The clothing they had was on their backs and we think we're poor," Thacker said. In another place, a girl of about 5 came up to Thacker and had a candy cane in one hand and an orange in the other. "1 ler eyes were just sparkling," he remembers. It was cold outside and the Heber City man remembers that the buttons to the young girl's cotton blouse were missing. He put a coat around her. The smile that she gave me was the greatest reward. It was worth every dime I had spent to get there and get the items there, he said. An incredulous old woman was also given a coat. "She'd never owned a coat and she was a grandmother, he said. And then there was the 15 x home where 17 people lived, all of whom were starving and grieving the loss of a child. Thacker says response to an article printed in The Daily Herald last year was overwhelming. Clothing has gone to those in towns surrounding Colonia Juarez. The $7,000 bought enough flour, com meal, peanuts, pota MICHELIN" TIRES ON SALE! BURT BROTHERS Q Numerous individuals brought in clothing, money and sewing machines. Even the broken ones can be used for parts, Thacker said. One man showed up at the barber shop with a $120 check. He came back the next day with a check written for an additional $350. after a night of contemplating the worthy cause, he said. For Thacker, this isnt his first experience with relief efforts in Mexico. He had his own barber shop, Al's Style Shop, in Orem for 40 years. For 25 of those years, he cut the hair of local optometrist Ronald Pugh, who was involved with the organization Volunteer Optometrists Serving Humanity. Thacker collected used eyeglasses from customers for eight years to be sent to Mexico with that program. He and his wife, Cheryl, have been participating in the program for a number of years as well. Both are 62. For those wanting to give to the needy in Mexico, Derrells is still the place to take sewing machines, material, wheelchairs, coats, blankets, shoes and towels of all kinds.
