Look past tattoos, piercings to beauty inside By RACHEL CAIRNS school student to endless criticism and TX correspondent unjust comments. of the most One advice bits parents, teachers and adults in general give teenagers is not to judge people by their . outward appearance. Youth are always encouraged to look for the beauty inside a person, not to of a persons check for the name-bran- d jeans. So if weve grown up hearing this, why does society, especially the society surrounding a typical teenager, do t' exactly the opposite? I attend a public high school. In fact. Ive been a student in the public school system all my life. Ive heard the types of comments teenagers make toward each other - comments like, She is so ugly, or Why does she do her hair like that? and His shirt is way too small, are heard way too often, in my opinion. Oftentimes its my friends, or at least the group Im sitting with, making these comments. It seems that the smallest difference subjects a junior high or high One example is the latest g trend. Just because a teenager sports a belly button, tongue or nose ring is not grounds for accusing him or her of being a troublemaker, a body-piercin- poor student or - worse than that drunk or a drug addict. -a As farfetched as that sounds, in some cases its the truth. However, the belly button is a body part, just like the ears, and may I remind you that ear piercing is highly practiced and accepted. Punching holes in your tongue is not the same as punching a hole through your brain; body piercing and scholastic aptitude are not related. A girl in one of my advanced placement classes last year had her tongue pierced, yet she always seemed to earn one of the highest test scores in class - not to mention that one of our senior class' officers also has a tongue ring. Its attitude, not appearance, that people should be judged by. If a teenager has five tattoos, seven earrings, his nose and eyebrow pierced and hair that embraces every color of the rainbow, he can still be on the honor roll and have fun without abusing drugs. But if a teenagers actions are unappealing, his entire physical appearance is marred as well. Dennis Rodman, a forward for the Chicago Bulls, is a prime example. Its his actions that turn me away in disgust, not his unusual physical appearance. Kicking a cameraman is not winning behavior. If a clean-cu- t, handsome NBA player performed the same appalling action, I would be equally disgusted. It isnt just these new trends, like nose rings or even bright purple tresses, that make people quick to judge our generation, although the uncomfortable aspect of the unknown does give body piercing more merit. Its sad to say that clothing also plays a major part in being accepted. In some of my classes at school, Ive often felt that Im the only one whose jeans dont say Lucky or Calvin Klein on the label. Put me in another class, and my Gap clothing is looking like material. As long as a who cares teenager looks whether his shirt came from SuperTarget or Nordstrom? I wish everyone felt that way. I wish that the words uncool and cheap could be replaced by unique and daring. Ill admit that some teenagers wardrobes look like theyve been around since the 1980s, but maybe its all theyve got. Other students who are looked upon as fashionably challenged might not want to look like everybody else, which is why they shop at Savers or T other thrift stores. Again, clothing does not determine; who a student is on theinside. Teens d, See BEAUTYB |
