WSU art students to draw the land YOUR iSONE-STO- P BOWHUNTERS In an effort to help students discover new relationships between humans and the natural landscape, Weber State University art professor Mark Diddle will teach a Drawing on the Land" workshop in the desert of central Utah. The class, now in its seventh d year, gives participants field experience in writing and drawing. The students will spend Aug. 24-2- 9 a few miles cast of Thousand Lake Mountain north of Loa, Utah. Throughout the week, particisketchpants will fill a book with their clearest and strongest thinking in words and pictures," Biddle said. Mornings will be spent in camp as a group, while afternoons will provide individual time for work in the field. Guest speakers and personal critiques are planned for the evenings. The livingworking situation of this workshop requires individual attention to frugality, preservation, efficiency of means and recycling, said Biddle. This, along with the readings, writings and drawings of the workshop, leads participants toward a greater appreciation for the value and fragility of wild space, which, in turn, leads to responsible stewardship. Biddle developed the workshop in 1990 while writing and designing a backcountry guidebook for the Fishlake National Forest. This required walking many miles of trails - nearly 800 -and comparing field markings with maps to make sure all the information was accurate, he back-count- first-han- 100-pa- ry HEADQUARTERS )BR0WNIN& The fast There Is TARGET RANGE PRO SHOP - INSTRUCTION mm? I was spending days at a time alone, and the journal work tended to become personal and expressive. It became the best sketchbooking Id had. The workshop will cater to art who wish majors and to discover the value of maintaining a sketchbook, renew an indi- vidual sense of self or find drawing as an opportunity to richly experience nature.
