Matt's Video Picks! (Fanfare music bjjircs.) This summer I thought I'd delve a li(tle deeper into my extensive video collection to dust off a few energetic classics for summer viewing. I Icre arc a for those of you who few must-renhaven't seen them. Army of Darkness Yes, friends and neighbors, here you have it ... my favorite movie of all time. After about 7,000 repeated viewings, it keeps getting better! The third installment of the Evil Dead series, this one is a spoof of just about every horror and medieval picture ever made. Thc show picks up where Evil Dead II left olf. Ash (Bruce Campbell), as well as his chainsaw, his shotgun and his Oldsmobile, are dropped off right smack-da- b in the middle of medieval times. In order to get out of medieval times. Ash goes in search of a spell book called the Nccronomicon. He bumbles this and unleashes an army of undcad soldiers upon the hapless villagers. . . Army of Darkness features Sam Raimis (Darkman, The Quick and the Dead) avant garde direction techniques, Campbells incredible deadpan delivery, some dam exciting n effects, the coolest anyone has ever heard in any movie, and more walking skeletons than weve seen since Jason ana the Argonauts. This one cannot be missed. Find it in the cult classics section in your local video store. Dune - David Lynch (The Elephant Man, Lost Highway) directed the surreal, bikarre, and richly photographed epic Dune. Based on the classic sci--fi novel by Frank Herbert, this Dino De Laurentiis presentation is one of the most classic sci-- fi movies made, period. Except for the bad haircuts, one would never know that this movie was made 13 years ago. The effects are amazing, the cinematography and lighting are perfect, and the sets are breathtaking. - The story follows Paul Atreides as he travels to Arrakis, the desert planet also known as Dune. Once there, his rise to fulfill an age-ol- d prophecy begins, and a d plot unfolds. This film is incredible, plain and simple, and a must-se- e for science fiction fans everywhere. -Robin Hood: Men In Tights ITo me, Robin Hood: Men in Tights is THE summer movie. This trait, usually his strongest, is always his downfall because it proves to be his weakness. For example, in Othello, the Moor of Venice, Othello's greatest trait is that he is too trusting and therefore he clouds his own wise judgement by trusting the wrong people. In "Hamlet, Prince Hamlet analyzes everything. When his father, a ghost, asks Hamlet to avenge his murder by killing his uncle Claudius, Hamlet people, situations, and even his own decisions to the point where it is his difficult to distinguish between his sanity and his feigned madness. The Cedar City festival play was presented with WWI costuming and dark and dreary stage design, signifying and reinforcing the themes of seeming vs. being and chaos vs. order. There is some humor, and although light, the play is very black and more ironic than comic. But that is the ultimate element in Hamlet, irony, and one walks away from this play feeling elated by the quality of the performance and yet oppressed by the portrayal of its themes, so much so that a sense of ambivalence governs the mind, just as it did Hamlets mind. ovcr-analyz- es DIANE Examiner BROWNStandard Henry V Henry V is the ultimate of patriotic plays. Driven by the misuse of a particular law, Henry V embarks on a crusade to rid his " freeway into two and a half lanes. Pretty scary for any driver, but as a new driver its best to avoid any large trucks that might pass and take your side mirror reconstruction on Interstate 15. But whats been missed is how the reconstruction affects us, Utahs teenagers. Those cement barriers bugged me because they were so close, said Amy who just Cochell, a graduated from Layton High School. Not only are there barriers, the Utah Department of Transportation has managed to fit a normal three-lan- e :opy Prince of Denmark 1 iHJi & Gibby about his first trip into Salt Lake City. He just turned 16 in May and will be a senior. All new drivers have trouble getting on and off exits. This reconstruction has made it much worse for new Utah drivers; now they cannot even find the exits. The signs in reconstruction areas are terrible. No one knows how fast to , go or even which lane leads into which drivers should new lane. Brand-nedefinitely have a knowledgeable navigator when they first adventure onto Heres another thought: Did ALL 5 really need to be the bridges along done this summer? UDOT has started major reconstruction for this year on all bridges. One of the saddest things about this reconstruction is that they could have rebuilt one crumbling bndge each summer and worked on it gradually, but instead they decided to take years and slowly fix all the bridges at once. Viola, who is shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria and who believes that her twin brother, Sebastian, is dead. Viola disguises herself as a boy and enlists herself in the service of Orsino, the duke of the country. Orsino, on the other hand, is trying to woo the Countess Olivia. Olivia's brother and father have died recently and she has vowed not to accept a suitor for seven years. Orsino sends Viola, masquerading as Ccsario, to woo the Countess on his behalf. Olivia falls in love with Ccsario, and a mass of confusion ensues involving her uncle Sir Toby Belch, his wench Maria, her adviser Malvolio and yet another clumsy suitor. Sir Andrew Agucchcck. Olivia marries Sebastian, thinking it's Ccsario. Viola catches Orsino and all is found out. I low ever, its a crazy, colorful carnival trying to get there. No one has written about only having your license for a year or so and driving so close to a cement barrier that you receive cement bums up to your elbows. - 0 1 Twelfth Night little-know- stop-motioone-line- " Shakespeare. Shakespeare's plots characters, conflicts and themes are univcnal. They go beyond the bounds of time - they arc not constricted to any particular era or situation. That's one of the great things about Shakespeare that you don't find in other writers, and the reason why today's teens can get just as much from Slukcspcarc as their parents did. Everyone can identify with the characters in Shakespeares plays. 1 1 is protagonists, or the main characters, are like regular people with flaws and virtues, good and bad. Everyone can sec a little bit of themselves in Hamlet or Ophelia. Shakespeare's resolutions to the conflicts in his plays can apply to situations affecting today's teens. We teenagers can apply his resolutions to our own lives and our own conflicts. I recently was thrust into the midst of Shakespeare when I attended the Utah Shakespeare Festival, held each summer in Cedar City. The festival has grown to what critics deem the second largest Shakespearean festival in the United Stales, second only to the festival in Ashland, Ore. Every year six plays are produced, four Shakespeare plays and two from the 20th century. I first attended a program at Weber State University, organized through the Continuing Education program, titled Shakespearean Experience. After a series of classes discussing and analyzing not only the Shakespearean plays but also the history surrounding Shakespeare and his plays, students journeyed to Cedar City to immerse fruits of themselves in the present-da- y Shakespeares labor. Tragic as well as comic elements are prominently featured in Shakespeares plays. The four plays performed this year were the tragic Hamlet, with Twelfth Night as its foil, Henry V was the n historic play, and Pericles was the romance of the festival. The Boyfriend and Charleys Aunt were also on the schedule. One doesnt have to enroll in the class to see the plays. However, if you wish to understand Shakespeare and the uses of his double-tongue- d pen, you should enroll in the class. WSU also has a special program for those who only wish to understand the plots and characters of the plays so they can enjoy them more. An alternative to spending about $500, the cost of the classes including gas and other expenses plus tuition, is to go to the local video store and check out Kenneth Branaughs version of Shakespeare, which is the next best OORVSpantWt ?!;;;. rM thing and sometimes better than a live perturmoncc. Itut you should ask yourself. I low important is culture to thrifiincss? Shakespeare was meant to be breathed, soaked up ami relished, as well os lived for the two to three shall hours of viewing. To be or not to be it be the Shakespearean Experience or the video store? Shakespeare really isn't as simple as a silly synopsis in an article or a playbill. But the following plot descriptions will give you an idea of what to look forward to when you meet with Shakespeare for the first ume. It seemed like everyone was trying to crowd me in and I was scared, said Layton High school student Curtis 1-- 15 that this road construction was started just because of the Olympics, and I think this is true. It seems that the upcoming Olympic Games matter more than the safety of Utahs new drivers. UDOT just recently announced that its going to start reconstruction on which is also terrible. Not only have new drivers been scared out of their wits on 1 5, they now get to have the same experience on One of my biggest concerns is this: Is this reconstruction going to end like the one they did a couple of summers ago around the Farmington Highway 89 exit? This is an area that was worked on forever, and when it was done there was no major change in the road. Is it all going to be worth it? No! For all of you driving along during the construction, just remember there are several hospitals in Ogden, Layton, Bountiful, and Salt Lake.
