A a reading and computer specialist, T em Culp ha helped the youth in the school take ad vantage of opportunities to et pand their horizon through a a- nety of computer programs and opportunities available on the In temet. Students attend a comput cr lab as part of their regular school activities. In recent weeks, the students have corresponded w ith youth in five different schools in Australia through a computer program called Tra el Buddies. Culp said students from both comments have learned about some of the differences and similarities in lifcsty les and dialect. They have also learned about the different school systems. , Teacher Lynnctte Farrell has implemented the information gamed from the pen pal corre spondcnce into her fourth-grad- e classroom. Displays and posters arc set up with pictures and photographs of students and scenery in Australia. They also have an interesting stamp collection. 1 Farrell said her students have become more interested in geography and teaming about other cultures since they have had the opportunity to write to youth their age in another part of the world. ' The children have learned about time zones, differences in seasons and climate and issues students face in another country. They have to wear uniforms Honor grader Andrew Cook. Oilier mu dents agreed. Kevin Hudson, another fourth-gradesaid -- In their school system they have to pad a test before they can move to the nest clad." Several of the youth weren't sure they would like that aspect of the Australian school system. The school year begin in February after their summer vacation. Instead of elementary schools, the Australian students attend Primary Schools." Packages with various items representing the different countries have been exchanged Photographs of each of the students Irani Australia are on display along with some of their personal interests. In addition to the pictures and postcards, each school has sent a representative mascot in the form of a stuffed toy animal native to that part of the world. I loll students have received a toy wombat and have learned about wallabies, kangaroos and koala bears which are native to Australia. The students in Utah sent a toy moose and other stuffed animals that are not common in Australia. The children from I lolt were Interested in the "Wallaby Crossing" signs in Australia. "In our country we have Deer Crossing signs but they have Wallaby Crossing signs. I didn't even know about wallabies before." said Andrew. Snow is not common in Australia and the youth were interested in the snow sports includ- ing skiing and snowboarding in the mountains. One difference is the children in Australia go surfing and waterskiing on the ocean. exIn addition to the change, the computer lab has in- - roll KaysviHe Junior High third term School, SEVENTH GRADE 4 0 Honor Roll: Aiyua Andmon. Elementary students work on computers in one of the classrooms. The school has been corresponding with several students in Australia so that students can learn more about each other's lifestyle. ROOM: Holt COMPUTER-FILLE- volvcd students in a specialized reading program designed to fit specific needs for each individual student. They can go as fast or slow as they like. The kids read a book and answer questions on the computer about what they have read. You wouldn't believe how excited they have been to participate and how much their skills have improved," said Culp. One reason the reading program has been so successful is that the students can go back and work on a level if needed and the other children won't find out. Those ready to participate in accelerated reading also have the opportunity to skip ahead of their class. The children who answer the questions cor first-gra- rectly receive a treat once a week. Culp said she asked herself w hy kids would come in and sit down on their ow n to take a test on a book. She decided the answer was the immediate feedback the students receive from the sound cards in each computer. Tund-raiscwere held by the school to buy software for the reading programs and computers for the school. In addition to funds obtained through the school district and Title One money. Holt has become a pilot school for IBM and has received additional programs for testing purposes for the company that will be implemented into other school programs. Culp said that when she was asked to be in charge of the com puter lab three yean ago, she knew very little about computers. Since that time, she has learned about computers, literally inside and out. Now she can take a computer without a hard drive and not only repair it or upgrade the inner workings but teach the tcachcn how to use computers and make the process fun. As part of an effort to help educators become familiar with the internet and Culp sends messages to the teachers on a n regular basis. She is in the school for sending the teachers Powers over the computers from a virtual florist. When the school received money for computers, Culp said she knew she could either get a involved in concert band. She is cheerleader and was recently selected to the Clearfield Highcheerlcading She maintains squad for 1997-9a 3.6 grade point average. Kara Stevensen, daughter of Richard and Marie Stevenson, has been named student of the month for May at Central Davis Junior High. A member of the honor society, she maintains a 4.0 grade point average. She is a member of the school's basketball and track teams, is a member of the Lady Strikers and plays softball for the Mariners. rs few new computers or several older models that would do just as well. She and the principal rented a truck and went to surplus sales to gather computers. -It was quite a sight to see Terri who is very tall and Mrs. Gobel who is very rente hauling in ail those computers," said Farrell. Although the women were able to obtain 30 computers from the state surplus, so many were missing parts they didn't know if any of them worked. Culp said the principal was very supportive of her efforts and they took their chances"' with the equipment. 27-fo- ot well-know- See LAB7 Students of Month Moore, Ashley Nielson. Jessica Norseth.
