Messengers put their faith in plays to share religious ideas By RUTH MALAN Standard-Examine- r correspondent - Loretta Hart following it comes to acting. And the Messengers, a new community theater group started by Mercer, appreciate 'that. . The group is sponsored by the Clearfield Community Church, which has given the actors a grant to get started. Our mission is to minister to people in the community, sort of nurture the community, reach out to them and present Christ to them in a way they might not expect to see, Mercer said. Sometimes people will have a bad experience and not have anything to do with religion, she said. Mercer hopes those people can be touched by the theater groups performances. A hard sermon can turn people off. 1. Ifs a comedy, a spoof on New Age, Mercer said of the play Is Nothing Sacred? distributed by Willow Creek Resources in Chicago. People in the play worship Zero, who is just a big nothing. Its a different way to show choices and what way to go, Mercer said. The Messengers method of bringing people to Christ is pretty unique, but is based on common Christian values, she said. Even if we touch just one person, it's enough. But the idea of teaching through acting has touched more than those who see the productions. It also touches those who perform. Laytons Mark Oedekoven and his wife, Debbie, have learned a lot, and enjoy the learning and camaradarie they have with the theater group. It was Debbie who was enthusiastic about joining the group. She signed up for a workshop and her husband decided to join her. Now he docs more with the group than she does. "Its a lot of fun. I get to portray different people and the practices are. fun. We laugh and have good fun. We always get to meet new people, Mark said. lies playing the part of Sam, the straight man in the upcoming comedy. I play Sam, and a friend at work is thinking about joining a cult. I tell him to forget it in a nice way. It's funny and crazy, he said. Although the production is timely with the Heavens Gate cult tragedy still on peoples minds, the Messengers had planned to perform this play before the Heavens Gate mass suicide. Mercer-sainobody is in the play just for themselves. For actors this is unique. Their attention focuses on the message, she said. Jerry Nichols plays the. lead part in the production. Clif Kozerski plays the part of Mark, Sams buddy who takes Sam to the group who worships Zero. This is a timely piece, because of Heaven's Gate, said Mercer, this is our calling. People who are really thinking do research in their heart and turn to God, not some comet in the sky. Other plays are more serious, but this one gets the message across with humor, said Oedekoven.
