While on active duty with the Navy in the mid 1930s, he wa assigned to Attack Squadron 193 on the U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier Yorktown, and made a successful emergency landing in the ocean some 30 miles off the coast of Hawaii. What makes his experience so unusual was. at almost the same time, another l; Skyraider pilot flying off the same aircraft carrier, also put his airplane into the drink. Drake spoke recently at one of the Saturday Airplane Talks at the Hill Air Force Base Aerospace Museum. After he was rescued he wrote in his diary the following entry. The Navy conducted an investigation of the drop tanks on all the Skyraidcrs and found them to have a problem with water condensation. When the tanks sat empty for long periods of time, up to 35 gallons of water could condense inside of them. The problem was corrected after Drakes and Weldon's accidents and the Skyraider went on to become one of the most formidable airplanes used by the Navy and Air Force. Over 3,180 Skyraiders were built and flown from 1945 to the mid 1970s. Fees come with house these ideas and enjoy the . 298-344- formation February, as a time to let our loved ones know how we feel.
