Show 8 LAKESIDE Saturday. February 3, 1 996 Lakeside Review For airiness, float clouds on ceiling of room a room is too small for why not bring in the outdoors When painting clouds on the ceiling? It adds an openness, and is an easy way to decorate. A degree in art is not a requirement for this simple treatment. The base coat on the wall needs to be a light blue latex flat interior paint. Flat paint can be used on the ceiling, but a semi-gloon the walls makes for easier cleaning. The clouds will be white enamel paint. After the base coat is rolled on, the clouds are put on with rags, not brushes. Find some old sheets for this or a material that won't leave lint on the wall. As the clouds start forming on the ceiling, keep in mind the times youve spent gazing up at clouds, imagining all sorts of shapes. ss City By VIKKI LEZA Standard-Examin- Since an artist you may not be, half an elephant will do, or splotches that look somewhat like dolphins will work just fine. When the base coat is dry, take a paint tray or an old plastic container and pour a small amount of white paint into it. Bunch up the rag in your hand and dip into the white paint. Swirl the paint in a section to make the middle of a cloud, the solid part. to ot after each cloud. While the white paint is still wet, start blotting around the edges of the white splotch and across the middle once or twice to soften any lines. Keep blotting outward around the edges to keep softening the cloud until all lines are gone. This is what will give the cloud the airy feeling. Start in another area with a slightly smaller cloud. Parts of this cloud can trail slightly into the first, or be those fluffy thunderheads found in summer. There is really no set pattern for these, so if one doesnt suit you, add some more white and change the shape. The key here is the blotting that softens the clouds and makes them look realistic. Dont be afraid to keep blotting. Step back and look at the work from a distance paint can be added on top after the white is dry to have glowing Glow-in-the-da- rk clouds. Faux bronze Unsightly water pipes under a sink can be changed to look like antique pipes just by painting them to look like old copper or bronze. Vases, lamp bases, picture frames, mouldings, wrought-iro- n railings, bed frames and other accessories can also be enhanced with this type of painting. A bronze paint is used first if it is going to show through. This is available in an or even a spray paint at paint or hobby stores. It can be brushed, sprayed, or sponged on your surface, depending on what you are painting. Boy overnight in two public parks here after snow storms left roads closed to their CLEARFIELD fires. This all took about half an hour, says Cummings. Everything just fell into place. In the meantime, district representative Paul Parker was out flagging down all the traffic attempting to go to the original campsite, and redirected them to Hess Park and Bicentennial Park. Although Cummings secured the new campsite at very short notice, he gives credit to J.R. Scott, an advisor for the Arrowhead District, with planning the whole event. He pulled together the whole program," says Cummings. Weather changes in previous years led the Scouts to change the date of the annual event from February to January. They wanted to be assured of having some snow, but didnt expect to have so much that the roads closed. In spite of the location change and few changes in plans, the Klondike Derby still continued with suc original campsite. So if you saw the glow of campfires at Hess Park and Bicentennial Park Jan. 19, you werent imagining things. The Klondike Derby, a national Boy Scouting yearly event that includes sled building and racing, was originally planned to take place at Weber Memorial Campgrounds, below Camp Kiesel near the Causey Dam, for an expected 1,200 to 1,500 people. Due to snows that hit the area about that time, some rapid changes had to be made. With the roads closed, Scout leader round table chairman, and training chairman Kent Cummings arranged for the site to be changed to Hess and Bicentennial parks in Clearfield. He knew the boys were ready and prepared to go camping, so he had to find another site. After clear cess. Boys Scouts built their own sleds ahead of time with their Scout patrols and leaders. The sleds went from one station to the next, passing various tests. Each station, or point, was named after an Alaskan city just to make it more fun for the boys, and give the feeling of a true Alaskan Joining them were Weber River Districts troops 55, 358, 546, 402, and 286, from part of Layton, Hill Air Force Base, South Weber, Morgan and Ogden. Parents need to watch what they say Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Wrong. Words do hurt, especially when the wrong messages come from parents, says Dr. Tom Lee, family and human development specialist in the Utah State College of Family Life. Words such as Dont you ever listen? What are you using for brains? and When are you ever going to learn? can cause severe damage. Lee says few adults could thrive in this environment, but to children it can be devastating. Angry words are a form of child abuse and can escalate to physical abuse, he says. The National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse recommends these measures for curbing your anger toward children: Stop and think: What are you really mad about? Are you really upset about something other than the childs actions? Would you say these words to a friend. Would you want them said to you? Take a time out; Cool off before you respond to your child.
