Cox, and as ot 1982. : The school district saved about a half million dollars by looking at life cycle costing in just one area. The original design called for a metal roof. After taking the plans to an architectural and engineering firm, it was found that shingles would serve as adequately and esthetically look All right, said Dean Penrod, director of building and grounds for the Davis County School Dis- trict. ; He cites the mechanical system as another .area where initially the school district could have purchased a cheaper unit. In the long run, however, it would have cost the school more in upkeep and replacement values. The mechanical system should be operating for 50 years, he said. We didnt use the cheapest or the most expensive materials, said Penrod. Instead the 'materials were chosen on the basis of which would last the longest for the cost, or how expensive they would be over a longer period of .time. The mechanical system was also sized to be able to be used for the eight-rooaddition that is planned for the future. With the area growing rapidly, it is sure to be needed, said Penrod. Costing considerations were taken into account when the room sizes were condensed to the efficiency level, said Penrod. 12,000-square-fo- ot iin)FDy The junior high, which is a modification of the Muler Park School, took only eight months to finish the design and contract phase. This is the normal time. Penrod believes the district got a very good buy. We have the best building for the actual cost expended. We have our moneys worth, he said. Energy efficiency was another factor that gave major concern to school officials. The district had an extensive energy study done for the Muler Park school to find solutions to energy concerns. The building will have extra insulation and only a small amount of glass to cut down on energy loss, and the mechanical system has energy efficient features, said one-ha- lf Penrod. There is a built into the system that will help control the optimum environment for the students, while saving on is expected to pay energy. The for itself within a year. The lighting system is designed for a minimum watt use per square foot of light, 1.4 watts. The corridor lights will be on a schedule automatically turning off and on as needed. Penrod believed that the curriculum input has helped give the building some unique organizational features. The building is designed to keep the noisy activities away from the quieter areas. It is easy to find your way around, said Penrod. The nice spacious media center should be a real asset to the educational program." The gym, cafeteria, ball fields and outside area are designed to be utilized by the community all year round. The Farmington Junior High, designed by Morency, Hayes, and Talbot of Salt Lake, upon will be used by CAR LIFE local restaurants, also other areas available. Your home has undoubtedly the cafeteria so it could double as an assembly hall. We do not design auditoriums into our junior highs, but the stage could double as a student commons area, he said. The performances should be better than in a gym. The cafeteria may be used as a second gym for volleyball or other functions of P.E. to extend the space of the building during the winter months. The area was designed so the school could also hold assemblies or performances without affecting the physical education classes scheduled in the gym. The gym seats 600 which will hold most of the student body as well as increase its value to the community. 1982, Own & operate family type vending route.
