The report looks at the Review Correspondent CoordinaFARMINGTON tion and cooperation are essen-ti- al among community, teachers, curriculum advisers, landscape specialists, engineers and the school district when designing a schools landscaping. We use each other, said Alan B. Olsen, landscape architect for Davis School District. He cites the coordination with the community to utilize property cooperatively where possible. The grounds around the school are as much value to the community as to the school, he said. We try to provide the grass, trees and shrubs, but care is given to the design so that it will enhance the environment as well as the social, physical and psychological g of the students in the school. When a school site is purchased, Olsen works from the very beginning to place the building on the site and find the best use relationships. Olsen looks at the physical education activities but is also concerned with science classes in studying plants and the environment, climate and nature. Art is another area of concern. We are trying to provide more areas for teaching stations. The Holt school in Clearfield has a slope that may possibly be used for an amphitheater when the Utah Symphony comes. Some people consider landscaping a luxury, said Olsen. He is quick to point out that it is important to complement the environment. A well landscaped school helps the community feel better about itself and the people will use the school a lot more through recreation programs. An extra benefit is less vandalism because more people are keeping an eye out, said Olsen. In the past there hasnt been a well-bein- ' V. total project.
