LaDean Sorenson, 105 Ellison, Layton, urged hunters to come early to sight in rifles for the fall hunting season to avoid the waiting that many hunters have experienced in the past years. LAYTON the Wahsatch Shooters Association has extended the hours of the county rifle range to accomodate the increase in target shooters preparing for the up coming deer hunt. The range will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon, and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons from 5 p.m. to dusk. The ice will be lent to the club Without advertising, a terrible thing and they will the ice to participants for competition and sub-lea- se practice. Miller said that the sport of skating is starting to gain momentum in Utah. The ice rink he manages is over loaded with figure skaters, he said. Recently he has had to turn skaters away because his Olympic size rink is just not big enough. The only other ice rinks in the area are the Hygeria Iceland rink and the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City. The ice at the Bountiful rink is about 1V4 inches thick. This is similar to other rink ice levels. It is kept thin for economy reasons its cheaper, Miller said. The thickness ofthe ice does not effect the skater, he said. Its the smoothness that does. The ice is scraped and flooded with warm water periodically to give it an even surface. The rink has settled into its fall schedule which begins at 5 a.m. Only 28 skaters can be on the ice at one time, Miller said. The early session ends about the time school starts because most of the skaters are from nearby high schools. The next session begins at 2 p.m. and continues until 6 p.m. After 6 p.m. hockey teams take the ice except on the nights that the skating club rents it, usually Thursday. Teams must also rent the rink. The rental cost is $55 an hour.
