Last year it was Bonneville as the team to beat in Region 1, and the Lakers had only to beat Roy to do just that. Then Roy, which had already tasted defeat to its Clearfield rival, put together a super ball game to deal the Lakers their only loss of the 9-- 7, entire 1980 season, and robbed them of sole possession of the lea- gue title. Bonneville got revenged that loss in the state finals by downing the Royals for the Utah State 4A crown. Now in 1981, the Royals were in the favored role until Bonneville them 3 Friday night at Roy. Unlike last years upset win in the last league game of the season, Bonneville did it in the opener of Region 1 action, and did it convincingly. I was surprised, admitted Thom Budge, coach of the Lakers. I was surprised that we could run against them so well. Our defense came up with some key turnovers and that had to hurt them emotionally and mentally. Those kids are so unpredictable. They simply outplayed us, but we made it easy, explained Coach Ernie Jacklin of Roy. They got out front and we made some mental errors and then let up. After eight consecutive losses, Coach Hal Lewis and his team were in seventh heaven. We went from rags to riches, laughed the Weber Coach.
