Show Lakeside North Davis Jr. Keiew. March 5. 1981, Page Oil it The North Davis Junior High grade boys basketball team recently captured its first Davis County School District record in championship in 19 years with a perfect 'f CLEARFIELD School ninth 7-- 0 ,'i .V,,. league play. head coach The Norsemen, under second-yea- r Brian Poll, were 2 overall. It is the first time in the schools history that the basketball team has gone . . undefeated in district play. Coach Poll was elated with his teams accomplishment. This was a very special group of young men. Many of them were with us a year ago. I think we all seemed to sense even then, we had the potential to win it all this year . At the beginning of the season we set as a goal to go undefeated the entire n season, however after losing our first two games to Mount Ogden and, Davis our attention turned strictly to league play. It was at that point that our goal began to become a reality as we won the remaining nine games in a row. Two games that stand out in the coachs mind were with Norths closest rivals, Sunset and North Layton. We knew the strength of the county was in the North end this year," Poll comments. Our game at Sunset was unbelievable. We were behind 10 points going into the fourth quarter and ended up winning by 10 points. It was then I knew and the players knew we had the best teantin the county. Team play has been our motto all year, and was probably the key element in our success. Defense also seemed to play a major role as the Norsemen held their opponents to an average of 52 points a game while outscoring them 13 points with a 65 point offensive average. We seem to establish a sense of pride in our team defenses after we had held Davis to just 9 points in the first half the second time we played them, the coach replied. thing thats most rewarding, states Poll, is the fact that each player contributed something unique to the teams success. Jeff Parry was our consistent high scorer with a 22 point average. Phil Peterson was our big rebounder with an average of 10 a game with nearly that same number of points. Curtis Cook and Hal Schofield hlso averaged near 9-- : pre-seaso- . double figures and seemed to trade off in play making and assists. Troy Barber was our center even though he wasnt the tallest player on the team and always seemed to be at the free throw line. Roland Boren and Eddie Naylor always came off the bench to give us that little extra every team needs. David Gardiner, Chris Stevenson, Kurds Murray, Scott Mecham, and ,, Kevin Burns took pride in being the best team we faced all year every day in practice. Greg Bozeman, Troy Markham, and Dean Struhs are our returning players for next year and its our hope we can repeat again as champions. One thing is for certain, North Davis has turned the corner in being a team to contend with in Davis County and 1981 will be the year looked upon as the . .. . one that made it possible. ... , THE NORTH DAVIS Junior High Championship basketball team: (back row left to right), Coach Brian Poll, Kurtis Murray, Scott Mecham, Chris Stevenson, Jeff Parry, Hal Schofield, Trey Markhom, Greg Bozeman, Curtis Cook; (front row) Ricky Smith, Troy Barber, Ed Maylor, Kevin Burns, Phil Peterson, Dean Struhs, David Gardiner, Roland Boren, Cory Birt. ; !
