Show Page4B w Lakeside Review Thursday, February i 9, 19 8 1 Blast By South 70-5- 8 Wiidmig v Still Haven't Played To Full Potential? By PHIL KIRKWOOD Sports Editor No one could figure out why Viewmont coach Ron Johansen wasnt all smiles after capturing the Region-- 5 crown last Friday night with a convover South. .And no one incing-win really understood the chewing out he gave his championship squad in a private team meeting immediately following the game. On the surface the Vikings appeared to control the game easily and with two minutes remaining and a lead, Hansen saw fit to empty his bench. Even the reserves looked strong enough e South. to beat Star forward Norm Parrish had his usual star effort by posting 20 counters and Kyle Morrell added 18. Junior 8 center, John White played tough inside and David Peterson was more than impressive on defense. But even with all the good looking paper, Johansen still wasnt satisfied with the effort and the reason is as old as the Viking season they didnt play to potential. Our goal from the start has been to make the final game in the state tournament,, said Johansen, visibly winded after the post game lecture. But in order to get there, we have to keep our intensity for a whole game and not let up when we get a big lead. As I see it,, thats the only weakness we have. last-plac- 6-- . along with other teams and never put the game away until the final moments. By the same token, theyve also been known to rattle off 20 points in three minutes against any team, including the best. Two weeks ago against West, Viewmont found itself down 18-- 3 but managed to battle back before losing its only region contest in overtime. Although disappointed, Johansen said the loss helped his team come down to earth and took away some of the pressure that goes along with an undefeated region slate. It also proved the Vikings were capable of a. long comeback. So the matter that troubles Johansen about the up coming tournament is hot the lack of talent he knows he has that and plenty of it. And its not that the Vikings cant win under pressure because most of their wins have been by five points or less. The worry lies in whether his team can perform at its potential for an entire game against the best in the state. . , This team has the potential to win the tournament regardless of who we play, said Johansen, But we cant afford these lapses against teams like Ogden, Provo, Highland or Timpview. One bad quarter against any one of those teams and it could be all over. If we play a first half like we did against South we would be through., Against South, the Vikings bolted out to a lead to opeh the game. The contest could easily have been won in the first quarter but the Viking offense stalled and South stayed in the game. In fact South managed to lead by - as many as eight points early in the second quarter before Viewmont closed the gap to two at the half. But then, as usual, Parrish, Morrell and White exploded in the final ten minutes to lead their team to victory. , Effort to Prime Johansen says he will be making a concentrated effort to prime his team for Highland and the tournament and will be looking to Morrell and Parrish . (both seniors) to aid in the leadership. I think were right where we want to be at this point, said Parrish after the win over South. Were starting to peak and I want to beat Highland so we can go in rolling. We just have to play all out, added Morrell. We know we can score on anybody; we just have to work on our defense and rebounding. . ' six-poi- nt Record at 1 Weakness or not, the Vikings moved their region record to 1 with just one game remaining. That game will be against Highland this Friday on Viking hardwood and Johansen is looking to the contest with a double meaning. Highlands a good team and Id like to see us beat them, said Johansen looking forward to the contest. But since weve already won the region, Im more concerned with keeping our intensity up for the whole game and not simply cruising on a lead if we get one. Highland is one team we cant afford to play sloppy against. If we win, well have some momentum going into the tournament but if we lose, that puts them in a different bracket and the only possible time we could play them again would be in the final round. Intensity the Key Speaking of intensity, Johansen does have a point. All season long the Vikings have been known to just play 8-- 8-- . . . This was a rubber-matc- h game. Weber had defeated Clearfield in the Davis County Invitational, but lost to the Falcons at home in league play. Craig Hansen was happy with his Falcon victory. It wasnt one of our better ' games, he admitted. .Maybe we let down a little, after those two big wins over Bonneville and Roy. Our shooting was off. We shot less than 50 percent in this game, and we were lucky to win." Weber played loose and relaxed and smart, said Hansen. "That Dick Connely is a great coach, and gets a lot out of his players. Rob Thomas led the scoring parade With 22 points on 8 field goals and 6 of 8 from the line, and Bart Hadley was right behind him with nine goals, 3 of 4 from the line and 21 points. Bob ' Kirkwood also scored in double digits for the Royals. He got only two field goals, but connected on 9 of 10 from the charity stripe. The Royals barely edged the Bob Cats' 24 to 22 from the field, but had a hay-da- y from the foul circle, where they made 28 of their 36 attempts. In contrast, the host team from Sky View got only 12 of 16 from the line. Roger Smith and Robert Johnson made 19 and 11 for the Bob Cats coffers. Roy shot 48 percent from the field, where Sky View hit 38.6 percent of its shots. I never feel comfortable in playing Sky View, said a concerned Coach Ted Smith. Thats why I didnt clear my bench, earlier. The coach did substitute freely to eight men throughout the game, but he didnt clear the bench until the game was safely tucked away. Ted Smith, lost nine straight games to the Bob Cats when he first began coaching at Roy. He novy has 6 wins and13 losses to the Smithfield team. In the last five years, Roy has won 6 and lost 4 to the Bob Cats. Roy can control its own destiny in - Region One basketball. Should the Royals win their remaining three h - -- s games, they will own at least a tie. for the league title. They play Weber,.' at North Ogden, Bonneville at home and Clearfield on the road. The Clearfield game could very well be for the Region One championship, and that game will be played on the last day of the schedule. Tournament Time in Utah V The Class 4A tournament will be held on March 10, 12, 13 and 14 at the , University of Utah. Regions 1, 2 and . 3 wilL each enter four teams. The three region champions, and one team, will be seeded for the tourney, and will be given a bye for ' the first day. The remaining eight teams will vie for an opportunity to play the four seeded teams in the second round the four losers will be eliminated. After the field is reduced to eight teams, a regular tournament will be held to crown a. champion and a consolation winner. All games will be held at the . University of Utah. Roy 77 - Layton 61 ' Roy High School turned back a determined Layton team, last week . in a Tuesday game at home, and then traveled to Sky View to win by twenty on Friday. The Royals are now at 2 in league play, tied with Bonneville for second place in ' Region One, and one game behind league-leadin- g Clearfield High. The Royals scored the first six ' points of the ball game and then raced out to a first quarter lead, and were still in front 3 at halftime. They traded baskets with Layton in the fourth quarter. Then blew the Lancers out with a last , quarter spurt that, netted Roy 26 points and the ball game. . Robert Kirkwood, of Roy, led all scoring with 8 field goals, and 8 of 12 from the line for 24 points. Rob Thomas scored 10 goals' and one from the line for 21 and Bart Hadley added an even dozen points on six field goals. Brad McCaulley was the other Royal to score in double figures with 10 points.' The Royals made 33 shots from the field and converted 11 of 19 from the foul line. , The Lancers came up with 24 field goals and 15 of 21 from the stripe. Leading the Lancer charge' was Brian Cunningham with 17, Dave. Barney with 16 and Layne Sackett with 13. The game was much closer than the 14 point spread shown on the clock. The Lancers were fighting the clock as much as they were fighting the Royals, and had to take drastic action in an attempt to stay in the game. They went pfter 'the ball, as Roy spread its offense, and they were either called for the foul or got burned on easy shots, as Roy maintained control. . . ; This was a Must game for both Layton and Roy. For Layton, it may have been the last ditch effort to stay in contention for a berth in the upcoming state 4A tournament in March. For Roy it meant staying within striking distance of the Region One crowh. You can quote me as saying We have to win this game, said a somber Ted Smith at game-timWe cant lose tonight, if we expect to stay in the race for the region championship. Weve got to stop Sackett and Pearce, he said. Sackett got 34 points last week. If he gets that many tonight, we ll probably lose.
