The placenta site is also localized during the second trimester ultrasound. The location of the placenta is important to know should complication arise during the pregnancy such as bleeding. From 8 pregnancy in the fallopian tube, the ultrasound will show the presence or absence of a fetal sac in the uterus. The presence of a fetal sac in the uterus confirms an intrauterine pregnancy and one that is not in the fallopian tube. The absence of a sac in the uterus may lead to the diagnosis of a pregnancy in the tube (ectopic pregnancy) and further testing would be indicated. Third trimester The uniformity of fetal growth that characterizes early pregnancy is lost later in gestation. Consequently, large variation (three weeks) in normal fetal measurements at any age in the third trimester compromise the accuracy of an ultrasound at this stage of pregnancy. Nonetheless, measurements late in pregnancy allow estimation of fetal weight and fetal growth rate. The measurements taken are the same as in the second Multiple pregnancies can be diagnosed on a first trimester ultrasound. Measurement of the crown-rum- p (i.e. the top of the head to the rump) length between 9 to 13 weeks can define gestational age to within 5 to 7 days in 90 percent of the cases. trimester ultrasound. The for- mulas allow estimation of fetal weight within 20 percent of the estimated gram weight. Second trimester Fetal growth can be evaluated by measuring growth on serial ultrasound studies done four to six weeks apart. Obstetric ultrasound is most often done to determine gestational age when clinical dating is uncertain or when there is a discrepancy between the size of the uterus and menstrual history. The most commonly used fetal measurements are the length of the femur, the abdominal and head circumferences. The average of these measurements then give an estimation of the gesta Ultrasound measures in early pregnancy are more accurate in determining fetal age and the estimated date of delivery than are studies done in later pregnancy. Difficulties encountered in later ultrasound include the normal decrease in the amount of the amniotic fluid (the fluid which surrounds the fetus), the hyper-flexe- d position of the fetus, enlargement of the fetus head, and composition of some fetal parts.
