Show TX.LAKES1DE 6 Thursday, Septembers, 1998 Lakeside Review SURVIVING THE HIGH SCHOOL SCENE Participate and be kind to have fun By JENNIFER SMITH TX. but in life as well. It will teach you the value of hard work and always doing your best, no matter what the task. correspondent ummer has come to an end, and the dreaded word -school - is here. As a graduated r, I have some advice for each of you lucky people who are returning to the high school scene this fall. I use lucky both sarcastically and for reals. You are lucky because high school is a great experience and it flies by so quickly. We all know its fun while it lasts, but there are some major downfalls such as homework, long classes, science (say no more) . . . Here is some advice to make your high school years the best ever. First of all, no regrets. You don't want to graduate and in looking back say, Oh, I wish I had done this or that. Manage your time wisely so that you wont neglect any of your top priorities. : I'm sure youll never look back and say, I wish I had spent an hour longer on my English project (unless you spent zero), but you will say, I wish I had built stronger friendships and spent more time with my family. Also, you dont want to do anything stupid that will make you feel guilty afterward. Everyone has different standards, but whatever yours are, stand fast in those beliefs and you'll be a lot happier. With school work, my advice is just do it. Sure, it isnt always the greatest, but grin and bear it, and if you know youll be doing the work you might as well put in the extra effort and always do your best job. This will pay off not only in report cards Immediate benefits could be scholarships and awards which will definitely come in handy since college isnt quite as inexpensive as high school. So many people during high school get their feelings hurt or are in little cliques that can be very ridiculous. School flies by so quickly that theres no time for these minor drawbacks. If you find yourself in these situations, think of someone who doesnt have it as good as you do, because even if youre having a bad day, someone always has it worse. Then try to make their day a little brighter. One thing Ive found really rewarding is walking down the halls at school and trying to learn everyones names and saying Hello to these individuals by their names. Its really rewarding to see how this builds so many friendships, and it makes the walks in between classes a lot of fun. Also, theres always that one person sitting alone at a lunch table or walking with his or her head down. Take the initiative to make a difference in that persons life. Youll always be glad you did. Respect everyone. Even those teachers who seem like they were never teenagers and you would rather visit the dentist then go to their class. Teachers are human beings, too, and by respecting them and becoming their friends (amazing how that works), youll enjoy your school day a lot more and those long boring classes will seem a little more bearable. Respecting your peers is also very important. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and circumstances, and you shouldnt pass judgments on people based solely on their appearance. So many times ' people get caught up on name brands, the latest fashions and hairstyles when those things really arent whats important. With this in mind, choose friends who share the same interests as you and who are striving for the same goals, not friends who are so popular, popular, popular but are a total jerk to others. Be popular, but the kind of popular that everyone likes because youre nice to everyone. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Dances, games, clubs, school plays and getting involved is what makes high school so fun. Dont sit back and watch things happen, be a participator and have fun taking part in all that high school has to offer. With dating, be creative. Some of my favorite dates are the cheapest ones that were just wild and fun! Ive also learned that sometimes someone may ask you out that youre not really excited to go with, but always give that person a chance because usually it ends up being a blast. Most of all, dont get caught up in any of the superficial things about high school and life in general. Although school sometimes does seem long and hard, it really is a great experience and it flies by so fast. In looking back, I'm glad that I got so involved and that I really tried to make every day a great experience. I now encourage each of you to do the same. The school bells are ringing, so I better let you start your journey through some of the best days of your life. Now, you don't need to fit the stereotypical mold of being a male, bulging muscles to go to the gym. Many female teens go to work out also. More then you think. The group continued singing songs off their popular album, adding in a song from Secret, Tired. Im sure they were tired, too, because they put on a great show for an audience full of energetic young people. Matchbox 20 left the stage but an encore was given because they hadn't sung one song off their CD, Long Day. The crowd was screaming, wanting more, and that is exactly what they got. Rob Thomas came back on stage alone at first with a guitar and a cigarette. He sang a one-wosong he wrote especially for Utah titled - what else -Utah.
