Show 3W Lakeside Review LAKESIDE Be safe during holiday weekend In1 'preparation for the upcoming Labor Day weekend, the Utah Highway Patrol wants to remind all motorists that they need to play it safe on this holiday 'Weekend. t j The focus of the Highway Patrol's 'activities 'for this weekend will include occupant restraints, DU1, aggressive driving and speed. Troopers will be out in full, force trying to enforce these laws, lm According to Trooper Ted Tingey, Public Information Officer for the Highway Patrol in Davis County; Many drivers and front seat passengers dont realize 'the dangers of not buckling themselves up, let alone their children. Only 60 percent of the people in the state of Utah buckle their safety belts and only 75 percent of children are restrained while riding in a vehicle. Motor vehicle crashes continue to dominate mortality records in the state of Utah. They claimed the lives of more than 350 Utahns last year. By using safety belts and child restraint devices, the states death and serious disability rate could be reduced by approximately 50 percent. Anyone who observes an unrestrained child in a motor vehie cle can now call a number, (800) 887 KIDS, and the Utah Safety council will take down the information and send the observed individuals an educational packet including re sources for low cost safety seats and tips on how to keep your children buckled up. Tingey also stresses the importance of slowing down and obeying the speed limits as you make your way through the various road construction sites throughout the state. As a reminder to all motorists, the Fines are now doubled for speeding in a construction zone. According to Tingey, It's easy to speed and drivers often try to justify doing it by using various excuses: I'm a good driver, Tm driving the same speed as everyone else, etc. Thirty percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes involve speed. Why take the chance of injuring or killing yourself, loved ones or others? The Highway Patrol wants to warn that aggressive driving, also known as road rage, poses a threat to everyone and will not be tolerated. Slow down, allow yourself plenty of time to get to where you are going, reduce your level of frustration before getting behind the wheel, and be courteous to your fellow motorists out there.
