Show LakesideCommunity 12 Tuesday, August 25, 1998 Smith From 7 a 3.5 grade point average. ' It would have been a 1.5 if we, his parents and teachers, had not been there. Hes learned organizational skills and he learned techniques, Smith said. Most children do not outgrow the disorder and most girls are left undiagnosed because they are more quieter than boys. It is important first to rule out hearing, sight and other problems that can impair a childs learning ability. That is why a physical examination is important. She said. In the CHADD meetings parents also learn medication is not the only way to cope with the disorder. They learn about other options, as well as the drug, Ritalin. Although many students have succeeded because they were using Ritalin. - Parents find out they are not bad parents. Too many times they are told if only they disci- plined their child more. Parents get so frustrated, Smith said. Winifred Barrett, for the Davis County Branch of CHADD, agrees. We got accused so much. Wed go to the mall and people would say, If you disciplined your child. People are too willing to blame the family. I know Im a good mom, Barrett said. Barrett met Smith three years ago shortly after her son, now 12, was diagnosed with ADD. Barrett recalls the day her sons teacher suggested that there - ,-- was something wrong with him. an excuse not to succeed or to act out. took it home, put it face down in the drawer and ignored it for three days. After summing up the courage to read it, she called Smith and cried my brains out to her. The two became friends and have since worked together to help others understand a disability that has a stigma to it. Barrett said it infuriates her when she hears of a physician prescribing Ritalin after a We have to teach them The teacher gave Barrett some literature to read and Barrett If after researching everything else and ruling everything else out, then the doctor can prescribe Ritalin, but not before that, she said. Paula Smoot of Harrisville has recently taken the job as of the WeberBox Elder Branch of CHADD. She works with Lee Berger. Smoot said she knew something was wrong with her son and insisted he get tested when he was in kindergarten. It was not until he was in fourth grade that he was diagnosed. The principal and teachers at Pioneer Elementary have worked willingly with Smoot and her son. This year he attends Wahlquist Junior High School as a seventh-grade- r. Smoot has met with his counselor and has made a 504 plan, which makes accommodations for him so he can succeed in the classroom. Smith said its important for parents to know that because a child is diagnosed with any type of attention deficit disorder it does not mean it gives the child re- sponsibility. They have to learn They have to make a plan and do the plan. For too many kids its a struggle and too many of them drop out, . Smith said. n. Lakeside Review Parents, educators and the student have to find ways to help the child learn and to do well in the classroom. Federal laws mandate that educators and parents help the students. CHADD helps parents know what their students rights are, Smith said, and how parents can request help. 41- - iniiii iinli in u WtEWf iflliii ii m Worlds largest hair replacement company is looking for people of all ages to be examples of the great look we can achieve for you.
