Show 4 TALAKt6iOti Thursday. August 20, 1 998 Screen SOUND WAVES Lilith Fair CD celebrates women of women in music. And at a total of 25 songs, theres plenty of celebrating going on. By JENNIFFER WARDELL TX correspondent Check TX. for a review cert in next weeks issue. you cant get of the Lilith Fair con- So to the Lilith concert Aug. 25. You stood in line for hours, only to get to the ticket booth about the same time as the sold out sign. Youve called in to any and all radio stations, and never gotten through. Having finally given up, youre desperate for the next best thing. Or maybe you already have the tickets and just want something to remember the event by. Or youve never even heard of Lilith Fair and want to know what all the fuss is about. Whatever the reason, there's the Lilith Fair CD set. As its title says, Lilith Fair is a celebration The two CDs include several big names, such as Joan Osborne (Ladder), Shawn Colvin (Trouble), the Indigo Girls (Scooter Boys) and Lisa Loeb (Falling in Love). Jewel is here, too, and as great as ever, but there isnt nearly enough of her. She has to share her only song (Water is Wide) w'ith the Indigo Girls and Sarah McLachlan. Surprisingly, their songs arent the old popular standbys weve all heard before, and will be especially welcome if your favorite singer hasnt come out with any new songs in a while. Along with all the old favorites are several promising new names or names I havent seen before, such as Suzanne Vega, Abra Moore and Victoria Williams. Many of them are good enough to headline their own concerts, and probably will in the near future. There are even three songs in foreign languages (Sur Tes pas, El Payande and Lama Dorje Chang). They are all beautiful, especially the last one, even if youre like me and have no idea what they mean. Individually the songs are great, a danceable mix ranging from the strong, almost-har- d rock Scooter Boys to Sarah McLachlans haunting mood-sette- r, Building a Mystery. The rhythms are infectious, and theres a good chance that you'll find a favorite. Mine is Rock in This Pocket (Song of David) by Suzanne Vega. Its no bible story, but it is a unique, relaxed and an almost jazzy trip into Davids mind. If you try listening to the CDs straight through, though, thats when the trouble begins. After awhile, they tend to all run together. It all sounds very similar, and eventually, very annoying. But taken in small doses, the Lilith Fair CD set can truly be called a celebration. The survey, conducted annually by the Horatio Alger Association, asked 1,195 students between the ages of 14 and 18 about their outlook on family, school and social issues. The association is a national it group whose goal is to educate Americas youth about the limitless possibilities that are available through the free enterprise system. Forty-fou- r percent of all students said they always felt safe in school, according to the survey, which also indicated that students in private schools tend to feel much safer than their public non-prof- school counterparts. While 40 percent of public school students feel safe in their schools, 68 percent of private school students said they felt safe. And while 40 percent of public school students believe their teachers and administrators have done all they can to provide a safe and secure environment, 64 percent of private school students feel their teachers and administrators are doing everything they can for safety and security. Myisha Ervan, 17, of Winne-tonk- a High School in Kansas City, Mo., said that while she feels safe in her school, theres an outbreak of violence toward the end of the school year when upperclassmen tend to haze younger students. The upperclassmen feel like they can do anything to the and get away with it," Ervan, who took part in the survey, said at a news conference two weeks ago in Washington, D.C.. School shootings this spring have even those students who feel safe at school thinking more grandma (almost more entertaining than Uma), followed by the invisible man and smoking nuns. About 70 percent, however, feel they can talk to their mothers about personal problems. The study also established that girls are not afraid to succeed academically.
