Nearsightedness affects approximately 63 million Americans. Nearly of nearsighted people also have astigmatism, a condition in which an unevenly curved cornea causes blurred and distorted vision. Laser Assisted Intrastromal Keratomileusis surgery can often correct these problems and restore better vision. Nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism are caused by variations in the curvature of the cornea, the clear, front surface of the eye. This curvature affects where the light focuses inside the eye in relation to the retina. Good vision depends on three elements: Curvature of the cornea (may be too steep or irregular) Power of the lens (may block vision or delay focusing) Length of the eye (may be too long or too short) When these three elements are correctly proportioned and configured, light focuses on the retina correctly and clear vision results. When not arranged two-thir- DAVIS HEALTH TODAY correctly, as shown in the sighted diagram, a refractive problem occurs. LASIK surgery is capable of correcting some elements. After precise exams and evaluations to determine the health of the eye and the suitability of the candidate, a decision can be made concerning corrective options. In conjunction with the surgeon, a candidate can choose to have one or both eyes surgically corrected during a visit to the surgical center. Some (bifocal wearers) have the option of monovision, correcting one eye for reading vision, the other for distance vision. However, most people choose to correct both eyes for distance. Some may still require glasses for reading, but in general, the purpose is to reduce or eliminate a persons reliance on corrective lenses. The procedure is virtually painless. No needles or general anesthetics are used. The eyes are anesthetized with eye drops instilled prior to the procedure and the patient remains alert. A small, mechanical device called a micro keratome creates a thin near- - ROBERT TREFT: He is an eye physician and surgeon. cap of tissue Trom the comea. The cap is folded back from the surface and the laser uses a gentle beam of cool laser light to carefully reshape a thin layer of the comea, flattening the curvature and improving the focus. The corneal cap is returned to its original position, adhering back to the comea within minutes, without stitches. The procedure typically takes less than 10 minutes per eye. Afterward, a person will notice that images entering the eye are focused more sharply on the retina, restoring clearer, more natural vision. For a few weeks, the eye needs to be kept extra moist with the help of artificial tears. Typically, a LASIK patient can resume normal work and driving within 48 hours. More than 95 percent of people achieve 2040 vision or better. Thats good enough to pass a drivers license eye test without glasses. Laser vision correction has been available since 1 988 in Europe and Canada as well as other countries around the world. Since then, more than 1.5 million laser procedures have been performed worldwide. No cases of blindness have been reported as a result of properly performed LASIK procedures. The surgery has been performed successfully on people 21 to 80 years old. It is d for active people who find glasses and contacts to be a nuisance, and those who simply dont want to be dependent on them. As with any medical procedure, make every effort to learn about and clearly understand what is involved. Thoroughly discuss the procedure with an eye surgeon who has been trained and certified to perform LASIK. Having realistic expectations and understanding possible complications or side effects is important. Dr. Robert Treft is an eye physician and surgeon at Mountain View Eye Center in Layton.
