Show 2 Tuesday Lakeside April 7, 1998 Lakeside Review HELPING HANDS Rain or shine, shes there to read By SUSAN TANNER HOLMES Standard Examiner correspondent Farmington - steady, and fun to be all adjectives de- rescribing Alta Wilcox, a source reading volunteer at Farmington Elementary School. After retiring from the lunchroom at Farmington Elementary m 1992 after 24 years, she just couldnt leave the school. At the suggestion of a friend she decided to volunteer to help children with reading. Now she works with the first-- , second- and third-grad- e children. Its rare to find a volunteer like Alta, said Marsha Woodworth, resource teacher. She lives a few blocks from the school, doesnt drive and walks over to the school rain or shine. She spends four afternoons a week from noon until three with the children. Alta's wonderful. Shes incredible and the kids just love her, said Karen Schleifer, principal. Shes very comforting, patient, very accepting and i 1 J QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: have a book everyone can read, said Woodworth. Altas an excellent reader and she reviews the books for the dialogue groups. Ive always been a reader, and if you like books, you can go anywhere you want, said Wilcox. Children need help at home. You can spot a child whose parents help them read. A lot of parents never help them read and you can pick them out, Wilcox said. We cant run the school without our volunteer manpower," said Schleifer. We just dont have the resources to meet the needs of every child. Our volunteers are another set of eyes, hands and ears to hear. Altas not above learning and being a student as well as a teacher, said Wood-wort- h. Shes humble and fair and she doesnt have favorites. She likes all the children and they know it. A model volunteer, Wilcox remembers which child needs what kind of help. reading help. It gets them 1 away from the classroom competition, KOHT DUCE, Standard Examiner Alta Wilcox laughs during a group reading at Farmington Elementary. Wlcox retired from the school lunchroom in 1 992 but still wanted to stay involved, so she began volunteering her time to help the students read. READING IS FUN: Legacy From 1 term, Hirschi said. The impact on the wetlands could be reduced by allowing any development on the east side of the road instead of the west side. There would also be room for a trail on the east side of the tracks, thereby reducy width needed ing the for the highway itself. right-of-wa- v The western route would be the lowest cost of all the altema-- , tives, and would keep the highway west of the city minimizing noise in the business park area and create better aesthetics for the potential commercial area. Council members were concerned that UDOT may not accept the preference submitted by Centerville, but the Thacker said UDOT Officials were willing to accept the citys proposal. UDOT has assured me that our preference would be their preference. Their major concern is cost and getting the Army Corps of Engineers to accept our plan to mitigate the wetlands issue, Thacker said. We believe this offers the most viable solution and will prevent future attempts to develop in the wetlands further west. said Woodworth. Wilcox, who seems to have just about as much energy as the children she helps, stands barely over five feet. Shes easy to spot walking the halls with her snow white hair and constant smile. She loves working with the children and that love shows and is reciprocated. Working with the children is fun to do. There are lots of hugs and love from the kids and the teachers, said Wilcox. Dividing the children into dialogue groups where they read with others on the same reading level helps increase and build the childs reading program. I work mostly with the children except in the dialogue groups. I worked with one little girl from Russia once. Shes beautiful and a sweet thing. She has a struggle, she has no English understanding at all and I worry about her, said Wilcox. Altas warm and friendly and if the children ask her personal things, she answers them, said Woodworth. If I have to leave the classroom, I feel confident in having her run the dialogue groups. When she doesnt come the children all want to know where she is. Shes my right-han- d helper and friend.
