If the road goes through there, I dont know if anyone can predict the impact it will have. 'The easterly route might also be the most costly to UDOT, according to Brooks Carter of the Army Corps of Engineers. It cost Utah taxpayers millions of dollars for the state to buy out the businesses and could cause years of litigation in the courts. The Corps of Engineers is mandated by Congress to follow guidelines that cause the least environmental damage where possible, but at the same time must be practical. . Certainly the least amount of damage to the environment would be alternative A through the business park, Carter said, but our cost analysis shows routing the highway through wetlands would be less than 5 percent of the total cost of the entire project. It sounds like it should be a done deal, but there are many environmentalist groups out there who are vehemently opposed to disturbing the wet- lands. Carter said the Corps of Engineers will continue to study the impact of the proposed routes and suggest new ideas to UDOT. One idea is to continue the highway farther north before swinging it to the east. There may be some impact to some of the businesses, but it wouldnt take out as many. Nina Dority, a spokeswoman for the Sierra Club of Utah, says her group does not condone taking peoples livelihoods by condemning property. The Sierra Club believes UDOT should look at transportation methods s Nest, phase facility , Appointment of planning commission member Review of weed abatement a protest Heritage Museum Foundation report Final approval Prestwick subdivision phase Continuation of public heanng to consider protests against the creation of Special Improvement District Consideration of resolution creating the city Special Improvement District No 1 as described m notice of in xenbcn April 4: Stephen S. We are opposed to the highway, Dority said, and we think UDOT has not given enough attention to obvious alternatives. Widening Interstate 15 and a well organized commuter rail system would be a good start, said Dority. She said mass transportation systems other than a new highway will make a lot of sense. If the state puts in another highway it will do no good. There is a high likelihood that people will build to the west of it and add to the further damage of the wetlands, whether they are e or not. I dont think anyone would be opposed to building a commuter rail station in the Centerville business park, Dority said. It would most likely add to the value of property there and certainly wouldnt hurt businesses or the wetlands. The business owners do not believe the Legacy Highway is the answer to the Davis County transportation dilemma. They say it will most likely add more conin that part gestion and build-u- p of the county. According to Bob Bemender-fe- r, plant manager for Biotron, if the highway is built, it might help for a while. It has been my experience, where they build a road, the developers come by the thousands. What is to stop people from getting permits to build in the wetlands after the highway is finished? Melby said, Vif you build it, they will come. If they build the highway, it may feel good for a while, but I believe we will all suffer, anyway. Lets face it, unless the government makes it a law that no one can develop to the west of the highway, it wont take long to get built up out there. man-mad- FARMINGTON - More than 300 grandparents and friends are expected to attend Farmington Elementarys annual Grandparents Day breakfast on Wednesday and Thursday.
