If music popped up, along w ith other obvious answers such as clothes (sadly), the opposite sex, and of course, family and friends - you are right. Wherever teens are, a Walkman or Discman is usually not far behind. There is also a good chance that you will hear one or two teens politely sharing their choice of music with other drivers when you drive down the street. from my educated calculations, teens spend about half their wonderful little lives listening to, buying and talking about music. Of course, along with this devotion to the music world there is a down side. Many teens find themselves constantly drawn into petty disputes with their parents over their music of choice. Teens want something to identify with, they . ; correspondent UPS need something lo call their own. I dont know if this scares parents, but they dont seem to buy it. What about the view s of the parent? the parents yell in unison. Well, if you have ever discussed music with your teen, there is a good chance that the phrases stuff or polluted minds" have come up. There is also the classic, Teens just do it to go against their parents. 1IA. 1 hat is the stupidest thing Ive ever heard. Teens listen to the music they listen to because they - this might be hard to accept, adult readers "devil-worshipi- - like it I also dont understand where parents gel their information. They think all music that isnt on the stations they listen to is bad, without even listening to it. If our parents would listen to some of our music, they might be shocked because its a lot better than they think. I can name half a dozen songs just oil the top of my head that speak about all the problems our young generation is facing. The Mighty Mighty Bosstoncs. a very popular band, speaks out about racism in all forms, stating simply, We wont stand for your hate. Pearl Jams lead singer, Eddie Vedder, is a member of an environmentalist group, represented by the tattoo on his calf, and the band has done a lot to raise money for charities at concerts. Downsct, a new band that has not made it very big yet, has many songs about gun control and stopping racism. All this is topped ofT by a cool little quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the beginning of their album, Do We speak A Dead Language. The Cranberries, with wailing vocals speaking out against war and violence, have been an influential band for the past couple years. Last on my little list arc the artists that get probably the most flack. The rap artists. Why do they get so much persecution because of their lyrics or their preference of clothing? Or is it that parents just arent listening to the music? They watch Oprah" or some other big bucks TV See MUSIC.4 FOR TEENS: Feeling overloaded? Help is on the way By LORI ANN EGGLESTON TX you sick tired of up all night finishing up details Are last-minu- on a research paper or project? And does it seem like that tower of homework is ready to topple over on you and bury you alive? You are not alone. As teenagers in this busy generation, our schedules arc often filled with many classes, projects, homework assignments, rehearsals. meetings, activities, jobs - that we all have to juggle. Its hard to find time to fit it all in, not to mention trying to have a social life on top of it. The fact is. all teenagers go though some sort of schedule crisis on a daily, or in some cases hourly, basis. To be honest, it took me two weeks to find enough time to write this article. But really, schedules do not have to be so stressful. I or the sake of all our sanity, I have put together some lips and advice Ive been given over the years. Maybe they can help you, too. Write stuff down Its impoitant to write things down. Even more important is to not lose the paper you write the stuff down on with calendars are one of the best ways I have discovered to solve this problem. Make suic you get a calendar with lots of room to write down all the information you need to know, including due dates. Weekly calendars work well for this. If a project is due on a Monday or Tuesday, a good idea is to write reminders on your calendar the week before. If you arc not the day planner type, the next best thing is to get a small notebook to wtUc assignments and the like down m. I would suggest getting a notebook that will fit easily into your backpack or purse. Don't rely on scraps of paper shov d in your pocket to remind you of assignments. Ilicse often get lost, thrown away or forgotten and left to the mercies of the washing machine. Besides writing down the responsibility or assignment, it is a gmxl idea to read what you have written. One gmxl tip is to read your list of assignments before leaving school for the day. This way you can remember to take home all the supplies you will need to complete each task. AKo make sure you have everything you need to take back to school the next day. Gel your backpack ready to go at night before you go to bed. Doing See TIPS. 4 |
