Its like Big Brother, my son said.' Just think of what the government could do with this kind of equipment, and theyve probably had it for 20 years, if pnvate industry is selling it now. I assured my son that no one in government was going to fit every car in the United States with electronic tracking equipment. Most Americans arent that interesting, and the expense would be prohibitive. This kind of technology is applied when it is some parolees wear ankle bracelets that allow them to be tracked. The conversation got me to thinking, and now I wonder if that car manufacturer isnt missing the real market for its new tracking system. The market? Parents of teenage drivers. My son wont have his license for another six months. Right now. Im certain of his whereabouts about 95 percent of the time. Once he has his own wheels, Jm sure destinations will change with the wind. And even d though hes a good, kid, the new freedoms of driving make me a little nervous. Imagine if parents of teenage drivers could turn on their computers and access an internet tracking Web site. There, we could type in the code for our teenagers vehicle and either monitor the cars course or request a printout of the destinations. Did Johnnys lunch extend through seventh period? What about that prolonged detour to Lovers Lane Saturday night? Did Marty go to the pool hall when he said he was going to the library? What time did my college kid get back to the dorm Sunday night? Use of a tracking system of this type might even qualify students-for special insurance discounts since kids who know they arc being watched are less inclined to get into trouble. Of course, most of us would never really spy like this. We havi too much respect for our teenagers privacy and veracity. And it would be redundant. I've got a built-i- n radar that can spot a lie from a mile away, and the kid$ learned a long time ago that its better to confess than to be caught. I don't know why my son is worried about Big Brother when its Big Mama whos already on his trail. on Thursday afternoons. Grocery shopping is done on Mondays at 12:30 p.m. is played every .
