I was mowing weeds down in my yard," he said. A weed mower is different than a lawn mower because it has exposed blades. Carruth said some weeds got caught in the mower, so he grabbed ahold of them w ith his gloved hand. The mower pulled the weeds, his glove and his hand into the blade. And although the glove gave him some protection, a finger was mangled and many bones were broken. When he returned home after surgery. Car-rut- h said he had to use painkillers to deal with the pain. Instead of making candy houses, the children decided to use the money to make a quilt to give to a family without a home. The student body officers came up with the plan to help out and asked students at the school to help by donating blankets to the homeless and money for the shoe collection program. One kindergarten child donated a pickle jar full of pennies to help buy shoes for needy children. She had been saving the money since she was 2 years old. It just happened that the kindergarten class was learning about the letter Q when the project came up, so the idea of making a quilt fit right in. The children are so compas sionate, they felt so good about doing it. They gave up making candy houses to make a quilt for the homeless. One of the children said, Too much candy is not good for us. Their compassion is absolutely wonderful, said Nielsen. The students used fabric crayons to draw pictures of either themselves or other designs. These were done in the middle of the rings on the fabric pattern. Money for the quilt came from the kindergarten fund and from a donation from one students grandmother. The children gave up something they could have had, said Nielsen. The sixth-grad- e students taught 40 kindergartners how to tie the quilt during class time this week. It was a real learning project all the way around. They were not thinking about themselves Nielsen said. 2W-978- ft Autumn Clow Senior Center in Kayvvillr need volunteers to help deliver Meal on Wheel, help in the knehen and teach china painting.
