But is it fair that the old man across the street believes I am a pot smoker because I wear baggy jeans? Is it fair the preppy gets out of a $30 ticket because the policeman thinks he looks like a good guy? And what about our parents? They are always judging our friends by their physical appearance. Is this just? I dont think so. But I wanted to know how bad the problem was or if we teens are just as bad as our parents and grandparents. To accomplish this I visited the mall and dressed in four different outfits: my usual garb, preppyjock wear, a business suit and gutter punk. I then asked shoppers if they could spare a quarter for me to call home. The first time around the mall, I was dressed in my usual stretch Levi jeans, a snowflake sweater, emerica skate shoes and my thick, As CHAT, KISS, CHAT StandardNETs chat rooms are a perfect place for teenagers to schmooze. I confronted a man in his early 30s and asked him for cents. He said, Sorry, I twenty-fiv- e dont. While I was turning away, I looked down to see that his tight pants revealed a pocket filled with coins. I laughed to myself. What a great start. A group of teenagers generously gave up a quarter and an elderly woman didnt give me a quarter but graciously offered a suggestion. She said I could go into one of the stores and ask them to use their phone. A young couple with two children quickly turned away and gave a blunt no, offering no justification: On the other hand, an older gentleman offered me a quarter and then wished me good day. Then I was off to the changing rooms. I put on a suit and went back, dressed to kill and ready to impress. Even though I had slicked my hair, I found that nobody wanted to be bothered while shopping. Two men in their 30s, who were dressed better than I was, gave me a quarter but turned and laughed - probably because my suit was last years cut. A grandma and a younger couple pitched in for my 6ne call home. Teenagers, my own generation, scoffed and sneered at me as I walked by, and when I approached one she asked, How old are you? I told her black-frame- and then I popped the question. I wasnt on bended knee, but I did get a quarter. An older lady, about SO, said she didnt have one and apologized to me for that. ; Boy, what a difference appearance makes, I thought as a 1 slipped into the I stole from Levis and football my brother. After lacing up his Nike Air Force shoes, I strutted my stuff like jocks do. The first girl I approached gave me a dollar because that was all she had. But when she handed it to me she said, Only if I can get your phone number. After a lengthy explanation and some old dance pictures I pulled out of my wallet, I was able to convince her that I was just acting and, most importantly, that the real me wasnt her type. One lady in her 20s said she didnt have a quarter but then asked me everything about my high school football days and if 1 knew her brother, the star for Brighton Highs team. Instead of saying anything, I just turned around and walked away. I quickly asked other people: a couple in their 20s, who asked me what position I played, and a middle-age- d woman. You give them an inch, and theyll swim all over you, observed the Crab of Ariel in Disneys The Little Mermaid. And hes right. Teenagers are quick to judge, often merciless and unfairly stubborn when it comes to something new or different. We either love or hale; there is no am bivalence or uncertainty. We are insecure, frail creatures who will shatter at the slightest hint of disapproval. Sure, we dress funny and paint our hair and fingernails wacky colors, but that is just a safe way of experimenting with styles and traits we think are entertaining. We do this to find acceptance among our peers by ticking off our superiors, because we know adults can never accept us for who we really are. This is because they just dont understand us. But even more cruel than the poor opinion of adults in general is the heartless actions that our peers take . . . against those of us who are different. Whether it is because of dress or intelligence, race or religion, those of us who dont fit in have a long, lonely, uphill climb ahead of us.
