Together these dashing fellows unite as d one sextet to create the album Adventures of the O.C Supcrtoncs." These guys happen to sound a lot like Ideal band Stretch, formerly known as Stretch Armstrong. The SuperTones album was produced by Tooth and Nail Records out of Seattle, Wash, Also on this label are punk bands MxPx, Value Pac and Choiti Hook. The SuperTones album has a total of 12 little duties, ranging from the Never Wanna Fair to the calm, soothing sounds of Roots. I The major theme throughout the album is searching for answers and finding (Jhrist. Even though their songs deal with their Christianity as well as their personal relationships with Christ, the SuperTones have made it in the secular market as well as in the Christian market 1 Their fame is comparable to that of Jars of Clay, another Christian group that 'has succeeded in both markets as well for their songs Flood" and Liquid. By ANGELA DRIGGS TX correspondent When summer ends and starts, what to the summer r job? When summer started, many teens pored through the newspaper, searching the classifieds. Some were successful and found summer jobs. ' Now, as summer comes to a close, many teens will have to rededicate themselves to the hard work and the long hours of school. Will teens choose to work through school or will they quit? In 1996, Sunshine Nakae, 17, who is a Clearfield High senior this fall, did an unofficial survey of her high school for the yearbook. She found that those surveyed . worked an average of 19 hours every week. Nakaes survey also showed that these same teens earned an average hourly wage of -- just $5.55. Many teens question whether or not working through school can really pay off. , s 1 Tho Bottom : j ! Mm; Frank Sinatra was once quoted ; as saying rock ,sS ; nroll was played I only by cretinous ; I goons. CAJ & Allison Sedgwick, 17, of Kaysvillc, had a strong opinion about working while attending school her senior year at Davis High. I worked through my junior year and it was really hard, she explained. Ive decided that 1 will just finish working this summer and save as much money as I can. Then Ill have my senior year free to have fun. Many seniors look forward to having their last year free for fun and friends. Many end up working as well. Sometimes school schedules become lightened. Loaded with easy classes, schedules allow teens to work and to play. Teens dont want to have days filled with hard classes as well as long hours of work. Nicole Gailey, 17, works for Gordons CopyPrint in Clearfield and is a senior at Clearfield High School this fall. She was just one example of many seniors when she said, Im going to work through the year. As a senior, my classes arent rplly hard and I only work for a few hours. Gailey also explained, I work with a good friend. We work for each other sometimes, and that makes my hours really flexible and I can adjust my schedule. Surprisingly, almost all the teens surveyed by Nakae answered that they got along well with the people in the workplace. They worked with people who made working easier. I love to work! I only work for a few hours and it is a blast. Working with people that I know every day also makes my job easier, said Sonya Bledsoe, a senior from Davis High School. She works as a janitor at Davis High School. Richard Peterson, who is a junior this fall, is also a janitor. He said he likes working after school at an elementary school. Its a good job because I only work for a couple of hours. I have some money but I still have time for school and friends, he added. Money is one reason that many teens decide to work. Cars, clothes and many other expenses So whose senior year is By DENNISIA WHISLER TX correspondent begins and its the beginning of my senior year. Already, in the middle of July this, summer, I was scheduled to have my senior pictures taken - even though I never called anybody. I received a letter in the mail with a brochure that said, Your g memories appointment for is at such and such tune and at such and such place. , This is the beginning of my senior year? This does not represent only the g scheduling of pictures for memories, but already control by other people and traditions are making themselves apparent. I will not decide what happens my senior year, everyone else will. ,, As pictures go, I will not decide what I wear, my parents will, because everybody but me will get a picture from my senior year. The classes I choose are governed by what credits I need to fill, and therefore my schedule is owned by others as well. I have to work this year to save for college and I have to do homework to pass those School classes or else I wont be on line for graduation. This means that my free tune will be spent working and studying. So when do I hang with my friends? long-lastin- it, begin to grow during high school. Kyle Dalton, 16, of Syracuse and a junior this fall at Clearfield High, enjoys work and likes earning money, too. My job is fun. My workplace is nice to work around and the people are nice, too, he said. I w ill keep working when school starts because I only work for a few hours at night and that isnt bad. I also need the money to pay for things, like my car. Dalton works as a server at Chantilly Mansion, a wedding reception center in Layton. Some teens simply rely on their parents during high school because they dont have time to work. Erica Schulz is involved in basketball and other sports at Clearfield High School. I just dont have time for a job, she said. Its hard because I want and need the money, but there isnt time for a job with practices and school. My parents end up paying for things and I work around the house and do small jobs, like umpiring Little League baseball, to make a little anyway think her name is Cynthia or Cindy or something like that. Anyway, I get to watch movies with a bunch of people I really dont know and then go home at 3 in the morning like a good little girl and tell mommy and daddy what fun 1 had. Im sure the music is good and the dresses are something to smile at, but movies? Also, as I understand things, I am supposed to go to all the other dances as well, including Sadie Hawkins and the Christmas dance, to which I wear a that matches my dates. Lots of fun, but wait ... we get to go to Cynthias house again and watch movies! long-lastin- Why, during school, of course! But I cant sluff too many times, or else Ill lose attendance credit and wont be eligible to graduate. Not only do seniors have to deal with the structure of school, we also have to put up with traditions, too. Dances: Homecoming, Junior Prom and Senior Cotillion. As a senior there is an unwritten law that I must go to all three, have a good time and then watch movies at someones house who is the friend of a friend of my best friend. I See J0BS6 Now, Im sure that the dances are fun. But I really wouldnt know since I havent gone to any. Mostly, I sit home and do homework. That is my idea of a good time. AP (advanced placement) biology is my life, as well as AP music and AP psychology and AP literature and composition. This is the normal high school seniors schedule, plus four other classes that take up just as much time and energy, like pottery and journalism. I jest. In reality, a senior usually takes the science he or she never took as a sophomore, senior English and some social studies class. Usually P.E. and health are thrown in there with a dash of foreign language and fine arts. Whoopee!! German and drama topped with Shakespeare and Napoleon. Finally, I am supposed to have FUN my senior year. How in the world am I supposed to have fun if all Im doing is studying German Shakespearean drama while watching movies at Cynthias house after dances that I never even go to? I firmly believe that fun is in the eye of the beholder, just like beauty. My idea of fun is different than Cynthias, different than the student-bod- y presidents and as different as the night is to the day when compared to what a -' normal student deems as fun. I think learning is fun. I am enrolled in early college next year so I can learn more. Other students think Im crazy! I think theyre crazy for wanting to see movies at Cynthias house. I think, though, that we can both have fun if we give each other space. Its that whole tolerance idea that is sweeping the nation, compacted and applied to everyday life. Ill respect your fun if you respect mine, and maybe Ill even get my pictures taken. That way, well all have a great senior year with no regrets and g memories. nothing but Dcnnisia Mhisler, who will be a senior at Roy High School, says she likes music A LOT and enjoys writing arm les about long-lastin- touchy, controversial subjects. |
