Of course the junior varsity squad is rarely mentioned, and often ignored, but to truly determine the strength of next years varsity team, a review of JV standings and outstanding individual players is in order. Region Five With the best record of any local JV team, 14-- 1 overall and 1 in league action its surprising to discover that Viewmonts head coach, Ralph Ashby, takes an unusual approach to his JV squad. Where we are more interested to win the game on varsity, the emphasis on the JV team is to play everybody, stated Coach Ashby. I feel the JV is the place to develop the players ; and it may be why we do so well each year. , ar All-St- ar Girl's Prep Roundup By CINDY SHY Gymnastic Class Offered tllr mark, and an impressive The Clearfield Recreation Department will provide a three week Hunter Safety instruction course for anyone 11 years of age and older. Softball Signup Slated this years JV will provide a good nucleus for a real good team. Roy, led by assistant coach Julie Burchell, tallied an even season with an 8 overall mark and a 5 league record. The Royals lost all their league games in the first half of the season, but bounced back to sweep the second half. Leading the JV Royal charge were sophomores Niki Nye with 11.3 points per game, followed by Lissa Wheelwright with 8.7 and Debbie Gates with 8.3. Assisting the varsity squad in their unsuccessful state contest, Nye played an excellent game and even finished high scorer for the game with 17 points. In the defensive department, Carol Gates, according to Coach Burchell, was a good defensive player along with Wendy Terry who was tough on the defensive boards.' We had a good bench and the kids had a lot of determination, stated Coach Burchell. They picked up the offenses quickly and gave the varsity some good games. Nye, Wheelwright and Debbie Gates, according to Coach Burchell, could have played varsity this year if needed, but spectators will see alot more of them as varsity players next year. Region Four Assistant coach, Kerry Fenwick, led the Davis JV squad to a credible 14-- 4 overall mark and a 2 league mark. The kids did a super job, stated Coach Fenwick. She went on to commend the superb efforts of Teri Hartley and Cheri Baxter, noting that they were the key to the success of the Darts. Cheri Baxter led the Davis offensive charge with 12.4 average points per game, and was followed by Diana Peterson with 8.5 and Teri Hartley with 8. 7-- 3 'league record. Highlighting the JV Falcons efforts was 62 junior, Michelle Kelsey, who averaged 12.4 points per game and tallied a 48.6 percentage at the charity strip. Kelsey also saw limited action with the varsity squad in league, as well as, state competition. For as big as she is, Michelle still blocks shots amazingly well, remarked Coach 8-- 5-- Edwards. Other top scorers noted by Coach Edwards included Elise Ibson, Stacy Judd and Karen King. Along with Kelseys impressive defense, Coach Edwards also commended junior Betty Yamada as being very quick and playing defense well. Both Kelsey and Yamada are expected to start on the Falcon varsity next year, according to Coach Edwards. Finishing with Clearfield in a league tie, Laytons JV, under the direction of Lincoln Hatch, notched a 10-- 5 overall mark and a 3 league mark. We probably would have done better, but three of our key girls got hurt at the same time and we were playing with only five, explained Coach Hatch. Top scorers for the Lancers were Melba Tyson with 10.5 points per game, followed by Kelly Beckman with 10, and Angee Gibby with 9.2 Tyson and Gibby also were strong defensive players while Joyce Helton and Beckman controlled the boards. Melba is really fast and quick. Shed steal the ball and drive in for the layup, explained Coach Hatch. At 61, Angee worked the inside well, he added.
