The city has been making plans for a new municipal building for more than eight years. In the citys 1970 master plan, which was adopted in 1973, it was stated that if growth continued in Roy there would be a growing need for a new municipal building. In 1974 the city purchased land on 1900 West at 5000 South with the specific intent of using the land for new city facilities. Dawson said he feels that now is the time to go ahead with plans for a new municipal building. He said he doesnt feel well ever hope to get a better or cheaper time to build than right now. With many contractors out of work they seem very willing to give favorable bids, he said. Dawson stated that the need for space at the present building is becoming more acute and the building will just become more congested as time goes on. He also pointed out that a nice-lookin- g, building well-landscap- street in Roy could do a lot to enhance the image of Roy. on the main City Manager Richard Kirkwood presented slides contrasting Roys municipal building with the new municipal building in Clearfield. Clearfield was used as a comparison because it is similar in size, services provided and budget. Roys present municipal building is very cramped for space. Several departments are clustered into . single rooms. There is inadequate space for filing and storajge result-- ; ing in a cluttered office situation.; The police chiefs secretary has?.; her office in the hallway. There is inadequate room to hold meetings --; or large public hearings, Kirkwood said. The fire station does not have adequate space to house all of the fire equipment. The building was designed to house two large or three small trucks. The fire department currently houses five trucks ? in the building. Location of the present building; is also seen as a liability. Being in! the southeast comer of the city; makes it quite inconvenient to resi-- ; dents in the. north end of Roy; Richard Kirkwood said the present? building could just as easily and Clearfield as it could ' the northern end of Roy. The city council gave approval to the city manager to go ahead with-the process of choosing an architect and getting some render-- ? ings made up so the city will have a? better idea of the actual cost of a new facility. . The city manager should have? the renderings along with a finan; cial plan within four weeks. The city has been accumulating assets with the specific intent of using them for construction of the!; municipal building and the mayor is hopeful that the building can be financed by trading these assets, and thereby causing no increase in taxes or additional cost to the ?.! of Roy. . , serve-Suns- citi-ze- UNIVERSITY MALL OREM fn nV QxvMMOWS LAYTON Isfors St OO HfrPIBE 3tOO, Si 7iS0, 9:43 "Young FroftbewlWti" 1:30, 5:15, 9:00 Z0RR0 3:30, 7:15 Young NOW '4:30 MMMOUMT GLUE-AL- 4 "9opyo" SCATS BIPOAI AiOO ALL $1.
