The home, located at 239 N. Lakeview Dr., Clearfield, was occupied at the time of the blaze by one of the tenants who recently rented the home. Caroline Cherry was asleep in the room where the fireplace is located and was awakened by neighbors who had spotted the blaze. The owner of the home, Robert Lakeside Rf view, December 4, 1980, Page 13.4 v. Stratton, purchased the home this summer. Fire Chief Elmo Hodson said that Stratton had been informed when he purchased the home that the chimney would be fixed but it had not yet been done. Hodson said the fireplace had been installed without the use of fire brick and had been located too close to combustible materials. He also cited the improper chimney as part of the cause for the blaze. He said it should have been a triple walled pipe that would have helped keep the surrounding areas cool. "People are buying woodbuming stoves and fireplace inserts and are Scott Hodges, building inspector for Clearfield, said the fireplace was improperly installed according to todays installing them without following . directions, he said. "They place them i too close to the walls." He said this results in a gradual' drying of the wood until it reaches a point where it will burst into flames. "People dont get building permits and have the fireplaces inspected, he said. He said by doing this a lot of standards. "Ten years ago there werent codes that would affect this," he said. The fireplace had been built with combustibles, such as wood and insulation, located only four inches from the firebox and touching the part intended to return the warm air into the room. Hodges said they still see, even with the building codes regulating them, a lot of improperly installed fireplaces. problems could be avoided. People dont realize that the most they would have to pay for a building permit is around $10, Hodges said.
