Dave Parker: A Leader Winners Strong team leadership might not add numbers to a .ballplayers home run total or points to his batting average, but it can minimize mistakes on the field, make a long season seem a good deal shorter, and sneak a few extra games into the win Column. A team leader is that special breed who can squeeze every ounce of potential from his teammates. He can make a bad team a winner, and take a good team and make it great. A team without a leader on the field is like a boat without a rudder. It doesnt ' v . s have direction. , Leaders with different strengths and personalities motivate a team in various ways. There are holler guys and quiet guys, team leaders who are battle scarred veterans and rookies still wet behind the ears. Some are Hall of Fame candidates and others are the managers of tomorrow. Most team leaders fall into one of three categories: Strong and Silent. This kind of leader carries a team by the example he sets on and off the field. Hes the type, who accomplishes most ; things almost effortlessly. Its his determination and success that rubs off on his teammates. Hes not the kind of guy who screams for his teammates attention. -- He doesnt have to. Steve Garvey of the Dodgers and ' George Brett of the Royals are two contemporary examples. Hall of Famers A1 Kaline of the Tigers and Brooks Rbbinson of the Orioles also fall here. ' The Hustler. He motivates his teammates by his ' scrappy style of play and ftever-say-dattitude. You can recognize him by the dirt on his uniform. He slides spikes high and is not afraid of starting a rumble to ignite his team. The Phillies Pete Rose and the Astros Joe Morgan epitomize this style, as did a e fiery infielder named Billy Martin. The ElderStatesman. Hes the player everyone on the club looks up to. Hes been around for a while and he knows the ropes. Hes had to in order to last this long. Having him around is like having a manager out on the placing field. The Pirates Willie Frank Robinson fit the bill Stargell and .. v -- , ' General Electric Credit . More thail anything these team leaders have earned the respect of their teammates. Some are loved, even idolized. Others are not even terribly well liked. Sometimes- - the only way to measure their contribution to a team is to gauge the difference once theyre gone. The 1979 Yankees, for example, lost much more than a .300 hitter and fine defensive, player when catcher Thurman Munson was killed in a plane crash. Many believe thp team lost their heart and soul. Right now there is some fear in Pittsburgh that StargeUs impending retirement will hurt the Bucs.' " " f - However, 7UP Suiter Star Dave Parker is quickly earning a reputation as a strong team leader. An effervescent man with tremendous athletic talent, Dave will likely fill Pops" shoes in Pittsburgh when he calls it quits. , .
