Chandler Given 'Personality' Award Lori LORI CHANDLER Course to speaking doctors creates medical dilemmas that educators at Weber State College are trying to solve. The foreign language department at WSC has introduced a crash course designed for emergency and other medical personnel. It teaches them the basic vocabulary and dialogue skills necessary to diagnose and instruct the Spanish-speakin- g patient. Dr. Oren Moffett, professor of foreign languages at WSC, initiated the career-oriente- d program and currently teaches the course to nurses, and other medically paramedics, related students and professionals. Dr. Moffett said, In addition to the goal of teaching the student to com municate effectively the courses have as heir aim the teaching of cultural awareness. The course grammar and the reading and writing aspect of the language and stresses terminology and realistic dialogues that a medical professional would encounter in real-lif- e situations. Although we dont stress reading and writing they pick up quite a bit on their own, said Moffett. From the first day Dr. Moffett walks into the classroom nothing but Spanish is spoken. Students learn the dialogues from the text book designed by Dr. Moffett and then go from there. The course uses a great deal of realistic role playing in which students play the role of the professionals and : m y the person with g Spanish-speakin- are dealing, he explained. Cultural lessons focus on why this minority acts differently than people in the U.S. would expect. For example," said Moffett, the students are oriented on the folk diseases and remedies of the Mexican culture. One student said, Dr. Moffett is a large part of the reason we learn so well. Its important for him that we do well and he puts a lot of effort into the class. whom they mm Off But before buying from a chain, ask yourself ...
