Bake in a families. Of course, nothing beats the taste of a crisp and juicy apple fresh from the tree, but with a little time and effort many new treats can be produced. A quick and nutritious winter snack for the children can be made now by drying apples. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples (The hand turned machine that does it all in one five second step is a good investment). Dip the apple slice in a mixture of 1 cup sugar and 1 Tbs. cinnamon and lay on trays to dehydrate. If you dont have a dehydrator you can put them on trays in an oven that is set at 150 degrees and prop the door open slightly with a hot pad so the moisture can escape. The apple will tend to drip, so for the first while keep them on paper towels. If they are being dried in the oven turn them once in a while so they will dry evenly. When they are still pliable, about like a piece of leather, they can be put in a paper sack and left for a few days to even out the moisture content and then stored in a closed container until needed. For a special holiday treat, try dipping the slices in a mixture of 1 small package of flavored gelatin and 1 cup sugar before drying oven until apples are bubbly and topping is browned. If homemade ice cream is a favorite at your house, try this recipe for a special treat: Candy Apple Ice Cream 4 medium cooked, peeled and cored Vt cup red cinnamon candies V4 cup water 1 cup light corn syrup 2 cups half and half Cut apples into chunks and combine in saucepan with candies, water and com syrup.
