The idea had its birth in the Safety Committee for the Weber County School District. The committee includes people from local law enforcement agencies, PTA safety commissioners, school officials and student representatives. Members of the committee were looking for a way to involve parents in their childrens safety. Diane Hancock, who has been the youth officer for South Ogden Police Department for three years, has visited many elementary shcools and found that the children were getand ting different safety messages from home school. The committee was looking for a way to unify the message. Larry Witney who had drove the safety bus for the school district for many years came up with the idea of having parents walk to school or the bus stop with their children. This way, he thought, the parents would become aware of what way the child got to school and what safety hazzards they encountered. The committee enlisted the help of Ben Day, because the comvice president of to with. Day felt the work no funds has mittee program was a good idea and donated company funds to get brochures printed up and he became the Ramblin Route Bear. At first, committee members had considered having a real live bear visit the schools but then decided on an animated bear similar to those at e Disneyland. Joan Makin from Washington made the costume for Day. Ms. Hancock came up with the Ramblin Route Bear signifying the idea that some children just ramble to school and dont really know the safest way. Ms. Hancock also designed the brochures which contained basic safety information and a request for the parents to go over the safety rules with their child and walk to school or the bus stop with them one day. . The parents signed a form from the brochure stating that they had walked with their child and the child returned it to school. When all or tnoSt of the forms had been returned the Ramblin' Route Bear came to their school and they had a safety party. At the party the children went over basic safety rules and sang any safety songs that they knew. Then the Ramblin Route Bear talked to them about safety and shook hands with each child and handed out safety certificates. Then each child got a glass of Ramblin Root Beer. Since this was the first year for the program it was confined to just the kindergarten, first and second grades. It may be extended into other grades next year. Response to the program was very good. Some schools like Lakeview in Roy had forms returned from all but one of its students involved in the program. Some other schools ranged from 70 to 80 percent participation. Ben Day put in a lot of hours as the Ramblin Route Bear. OFF The dedicatory offered will be prayer by Dr. Raymond Briscoe, a school board member.
