AFTER ALL the high schools are always saying that they are in the business to make money and the colleges are always saying they use the post season tournaments for money-makin- g purposes. Seems like a great idea. ONE OF the strongest points that this team pos- sesses is their impenetrable defense. Both the Skyview and Weber teams were forced to shoot outside because of the effective zone set up by the girls. The junior varsity team, Vicki Johnson. VARSITY COACH TAKE THE PCAA tournament for example, the conference that Utah State is a member of. They take all eight teams in the league to the tournament and the winner, regardless of their regular season finish, goes into the NCAA tournament. In addition the winner of the league doesnt get anything, but a seed, for winning the league. At least in the Big Sky, where Weber State is a member, the winner of the league gets to host the tournament. Another plus for the Big Sky is that only the top four clubs, in an eight team league, qualify for the event. some fear of the Cottonwood club. We havent seen them play but we talked to a lot of folks who have. They have a good big man in the middle and a great guard in this Brown kid.' Those words came to pass as it was the work of Tom Whitworth in the middle and Jim Brown that kept the Colts close In the winning moments. One had the feeling throughout the contest that the Falcons would win but the Cottonwood club kept coming back on them when they tried to pull away. By DAVE WIGHAM SALT LAKE CITY -Around these parts the Clear- field basketball team has been tagged as a two-ma- n team but in the opening round of the state 4A tournament the Falcons proved that the other three on their starting five arent that bad. MAYBE THE smartest league of all is the WAC who doesnt even hold a tournament. Imagine if you can, the look on Frank Arnolds face if they now told him he has to play in a tournament before his club is crowned league TRUE THE two big boys, Russell Florence and Rodger Vincent were very evident in this contest, with both scoring 16 points but it was the play of champions. As this reporter sees it, you have to have some motivation for the club in the regular season play. In the PCAA a team knows they can lose all their league games and still come back and win the tournament and go to the NCAA playoffs. The only motivation is to keep going because that second chance is always there. the two guards that gave Coach Craig Hansen his first CLEARFIELD had the right combination to solve the zone defense that Cottonwood threw up. When the zone collapsed inside Reid and Mark Wayment, the fifth star on this club, hit from the outside bringing the zone with them. That opened up the state tournament victory with a 7 win over Cottonwood. Both Mark Reid and Larry Read were the big play makers down the wire as both clubs were in the game up to 61-5- IF THE tournament is a must then go with the format that the Big Sky uses, take the top four and let the winner of the league host the event. the final minute. As luck would have it, these two were almost the goats but turned out to be the heroes. Another problem with the tournaments is the winners. Sometimes the favorites dont win and then a team with a mark gets into the NCAA playoffs. This then means that some club which was 19-- on the year gets left out of the playoffs in order to make room for the tournament champion. r THE BEST solution though would be to do away with . the tournaments all together. That way the team that plays consistent ball all year, not just for three days in a tournament, gets to go to the NCAA tournament. . 13-1- 2 EVEN THOUGH Layton wasnt playing up to their abilities, the Lancers from Davis County were always in control of the score. Everything the Granger club tried to pull even with Layton didnt quite work out the way it was supposed to. Even in the postgame celebration, if you want to call Cheri Hlavaty is very optimistic about her teams prospects at state this year. This week we will be practicing on staying inside when we run our offense, commented Cheri. Well be playing some tough defensive teams at state, and going way outside to receive a pass will only defeat the purpose of our it that, the Layton team wasnt too excited. At the end of the first period, Layton owned a 0 advantage due mainly to the work of center Gordon Anderson, forward Jay Moore and guard Matt Stireman. In that second stanza the Layton club put in twenty points while the Granger club could only muster ten more to add to their first period tally.
