Show V WEEKLY REFLEX " ' DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL. MARCH W' 15. 1979 w J By DAVE WIGHAM SALT LAKE CITY - One of the biggest mysteries in coaching high school sports, no matter if theyre male or female, is the attitude of the team going into the tournament. Tte Officials In College OaslietEiall WOODS CROSS gals, one the favorites, went into the 3A meet last week with high credentials, yet came away of By DAVE WIGHAM Last year the empty-hande- It seems more and more were seeing three officials in the basketball games in college. Right not its in the experimental stages but some of the higher archy are looking to install it as a permanent fixture. points but the Scots continued to nip away at the lead. Ben Lomond took the one point lead with a shot at the five second mark after which the Cats called timeout. Both Martineau and Wilkens had fouled out by this time so that limited the Cats in the play they could come up with. Woods Cross got the ball inbounds but pressure from the Scots prohibited them from getting off a shot. Cats came out of nowhere to place third in the state, then this year they were marked as the team to beat and came away with nothing. The tournament doesnt CAN YOU see this in high school? Even in college its difficult to see the advantages of the three-ma- n crew. They say that it gives more court coverage and that the officials get a better angle on the calls. make the entire season though, and the girls and their coach, Debbie Peele, can still be proud of their season. THREE OFFICIALS though, to this reporter and many others including coaches, bring on more problems than IN THE opening round the Cats drew Pleasant Grove and showed most people why they advantages. As one college coach said in regards to the three-officiact, I dont like it because in the crew you get one good official working with a mediocre one and a rookie. The other two try to show the good official and those watching that they are good. It becomes an ego thing. were so highly regarded as victhey waltzed to a tory. Maybe the team figured they had it all sewn up after such a devasting start. Val u Wilkens and Carolyn led the Cats in their win over the Vikings with Martineau scoring 24 and Wilkens another 15. As it turned out this was the only club outside of their region that Woods Cross played. Ironically too it was the only win in the tournament as two clubs they had beaten in league action came up with a little revenge. to move into round of action. 45-4- Saturdays 65-4- 3 Mar-tinea- - WOODS CROSS got their points from Martineau, 15, before she had to watch from the bench. Fouls played a major role in the outcome of this contest as the Scots shot 19 charity tosses coming up good on eight of them. Following a heartbreaking loss like this, the gals never seemed to get back on track when they took on Bear River on Friday night. The Bears, a club the Cats beat twice in league action, took the victory TRUE, THE crew wouldnt consist of three top officials, not in regular season games anyway. So that means at least one of the crew wouldnt be working if it n were the normal crew. Then in the NCAA tournament they say they had the best officials in the country. This may be true but there were certainly some glaring problems in the system. Each of the three officials came from different conferences and parts of the country. They call the game differently in parts of the country. two-ma- didnt know what to expect. With the team could discern what type of game they would let you play, with three its tough. Watching the Utah game on the tube with the three officials, one could see the different styles each official liked to call. One of the three let the rebounders go after it, another didnt and the third didnt seem to take a stand on the issue. It was tough for those big guys to look and see which one of the three was under the bucket to determine if they could rebound with authority. THE POOR players two officials ON THURSDAY the Wild- cats were paired against the Ben Lomond club that they had defeated twice in Region Four action. The Cats looked like they would win again holding onto leads up to five THE WILDCATS played them evenly for most of the game with each club taking turns leading, with the Bears finally on top. Many observers felt like the Wildcat girls were still disappointed from the night before. For the Wildcats it was a bad ending to a great year, but then remember most of the gals will be back next year when the Cats enter a brand new league against the likes of Highland, Viewmont and Bountiful. THOSE GALS who helped the Cats through the great season were Wilkens, Martineau, Cheryl Cleverly, Chim Greeg, Janet Williams, Gerry Jardine, Becky Petersen and Linda Jones. -- r I I DUTCH read about and hear about is the different style of ball played in the East or the West, yet they combine the officials, who also call the games ALL YOU I DOY differently. n Lets go back to the crew. If they want better court coverage to call the plays closer, either have a crew, then no one had to move, assign one official to each player, or put the third one near a television monitor. two-ma- CARPET ten-ma- n THE CLEANERS Over 20 Yrs. Both clubs came out smoking and when the air was cleared the Sky View bunch Then led at the quarter came the deciding period as the Bobcats continued their hot shooting, while the Vikes found things rough with the Sky View club, outscoring the Vikes by ten points in the period. 20-1- LAST YEAR the Bobcats were the last club to qualify for the event and following an opening night loss they went on to win three straight and claim the consolation title, for fifth place. ; This year they had to beat Bountiful and Granite in playoffs to get into the tournament. Again they were the last qualifier. In their opening round game they lost by two points to Orem. Since then though history has repeated itself as the Bobcats downed to advance Viewmont into the consolation, finals for the second year in a row. 73-6- 6 VIEWMONT HAD shown some pride and class of their own by bouncing back after their first round loss to Highland to beat Cottonwood. THIS IS a classy bunch of Vikes though and they fought back with everyone getting into the act. Kelly Downs led the scoring parade with 21 points, Doug Day was near with 13 while junior Paul Hansen finished with 11. The Sky View club had been burned in their two league defeats by the Viking guards so this time around they concentrated on stopping them which allowed the big men their success. It was a lackluster finish to a mysterious season for Viewmont as the Skyview Bobcats turned the Vikes every which way but loose, knocking Vikes out of the tournament at the Special Events Center last Friday. THE SECOND half started out just as the game did with both clubs finding the range and matching basket for basket, but the Vikes couldnt make up the difference in that second stanza. Viewmont refused to die and came on strong in the final period outscoring their Cache Valley opponents but this time the clock ran out on them. If basketball were played in five periods, the Vikes would probably have caught Sky View but as it was they simply couldnt make ud s iS the difference fast enough. ffoc SMALL THIS GAME was typical of the style of the Vikings all year, they refused to quit as they played their hardest up until the final buzzer.
