First would the Cats big man Mark McCleery break out of his scoring slump, and then too could anyone stop Aaron McCarthy of Ogden who was the leading scorer in the tournament? f THE ANSWER to both turned out to be yes. ONE GOT the feeling that the Cats would win the game but they did it in a funny manner. They held a ten point margin with about three minutes to play. Then with 2:05 remaining, the Tigers had tied the game and had the ball. When Mr. McCarthy held the ball at midcourt and made, a hand signal it appeared as if the Tigers would settle into the stall game for the last shot. But one pass later Olies Dockery fired up a jumper then went wide with the Cats picking off the rebound. 20-fo- ot THEN A senior named Jeff Ostler took complete control of the game. First he fouled and hit both foul pitches. Then, following another missed shot by Ogden, he dished out to Mark McCleery for an easy lay-uAgain the Tigers fired up a hope shot that missed and Mark Earnshaw came up with the rebound and was fouled. Credit must also go to a great reserve forward, Greg Tuttle. Greg came off the bench to give the Cats a great game scoring nine points and coming up with numerous rebounds on both ends of the floor. Ogden was so conscious of the lob pass to McCleery that they left the other side wide open which, with Tuttle, gave them problems. p. cups, other items field goals. These two facts were definitely some of the keys to the victory but in the closing minutes it was the coolness of the Cats. It was a strange game right from the start, the script went something like this. The two clubs would stay close for awhile, Woods Cross would pull away to a ten point lead, and then finally the Tigers would catch up and they would start the cycle again. After all, the Falcons lost their great player Jackie Beene to graduation. SOMEONE FORGOT to tell Coach Margo Jones about this fact though as the fiery coach put together a young and very successful club this year and they made their presence known in the state tournament. Fielding a club made up of three juniors, one sophomore and a senior, the Falcons came into the tournament as the second place club from the tough Region One play. THESE YOUNGSTERS had a rough going in their opening round game with Orem and as luck would have the Tigers came out on top by a score of The Clearfield gals were in the game right up to the final buzzer but some fine 45-4- 2. dutch foul shooting by Orem 'spelled the difference. The Falcons entered the fourth period behind by four points but quickly made up the difference and then from about three minutes on in the game was basket for basket. LEADING THE scoring for the Falcons was Karleen Peart, a 59 junior, who finished the night with 11. Another junior, Cindy Clark was next at 8 points while yet another junior, 53 Marco Lusk was right behind with 7. Sophomore Donna Brown scored 6 points as did senior Tami Roberts. The next round the Falcons met up with the West High gals and the Clearfield five turned them every which way to take a 6 decision. This game was never in doubt as the young Falcons came out and took the game right to the Panthers from the opening tip. 67-4- AGAIN THEY were led by who junior Karleen Peart with finished her nights work from eight field goals and the foul line for 24 points. Donna Brown added 19 while teammate Marco Lusk hit for Westergard with 12 each. Although he didnt score, 8 points, as much as usual, the defensive job that LeChemi- nant did on McCarthy was probably the key to the victory. For the Cats it set up the long awaited matchup with 52-4- 6 half. KARLEEN PEART, the junior, poured in 21 points in a losing effort while junior Becky Spaulding added 59 16. With the majority of the club returning next year. Coach Jones is sitting in a familiar position of being one of the top clubs coming back for another year. Definitely the Falcons have the makings of a great team next season and with a coach like Margo Jones, the Clearfield school will be tough. Ciiules Bucft Participates In Toft OunnsFjf Training Spec. Lancers By DAVE WIGHAM - SALT LAKE CITY Any high school coach will take improvement over the previous year. Woods Cross was disappointed that they werent in the finals of the state tournament but they did reach one of their goals before event was over. the y six-da- LAST YEAR Coach Wayne Baker took a bunch of unknown juniors to the state meet and came away with a surprising fifth place finish. This year the likeable coach took that same bunch, this' time seniors, to the tournament and came away with third place by virtue of their win over the Judge club on Saturday. 72-5- 4 We set goals all year, and have attained most of them, We noted Coach Baker. wanted to finis, higher than we did last year and with this win we attained that goal. 43-4- 0 Layton was unknown at the beginning of the season but they came on strong to make a name for themselves and with a lot of people returning next year, the Lancers will be a great club. PEOPLE LIKE the 5 10 Hatch, 58 Hare, 56 sophomore Elyse Smith and the 53 junior Helena Townsend will make the Layton club one of the best in the area next season. With the taste of the state tournament in their mouths, these young Lancers will be anxious to return in a year and finish higher. BEFORE WE all forget, consider the fact that this is the first graduating class at the school and all they did was go through Region Four undefeated, finish tiie year with a 20-- record and then top it off with a third place state finish. 4 Following their disappointing loss to Provo the night before, the Cats came out in this game with Judge with a point to prove. They wanted to show that they were better than they showed the previous night they accomplished that goal. This Judge club had beaten the Wildcats once this year in preseason, and they in their were league. Woods Cross then proved they learned a lesson the night before when the Provo club blew open the game with a strong start in the second half. The Wildcats put on a torrid scoring pace coupled with some strong defense and put the game away with a ten point splurge. Before the third period was history the Cats had scored 18 points while their sticky defense held the Bulldogs to just seven. IN THE fourth period Coach Baker let some of his other players get some playing time in. Finishing out great careers for the Cats were seniors Ostler, Westergard, Mark LeChemiMcCleery, nant, Brent Horton and Greg Tuttle. These seniors have set a strong tradition at the new school, one that they can be proud of. Although the records havent been checked, its doubtful if any first year school has accomplished the goals these seniors have attained. BEFORE YOU start feeling bad for the Cats, they have some excellent talent returning with Mark Earnshaw heading the troops. Along with him are players like Rodger Lowe, Tyran Hallows and Reed Call to carry on the tradition they have seen some great players from the junior high ranks ready to club matching bucket for bucket. The score was tied at the end of the first period and Woods Cross has established a strong sports tradition and it looks like the are here to stay. Joining him in the scoring parade were seniors Lynn Westergard and Mark LeCheminant who both found the range with their jump shots to the tune of 10 and 12 respectively. Timpview must have read about the Cats in the papers because they came out with nothing to lose and played well in the first half. They collapsed around the middle bottling up McCleery, and when Mark did get the ball it just wouldnt drop for him but that left LeCheminant and Westergard open. TIMPVIEW HELD a slim lead in the third period and when the Cats pressed they got into foul trouble and when Jeff Ostler hit the bench with his fourth things looked a little bleak.
