This year more than ever their exploits of three young high school athletes are coming to the attention of .the general public. SOMETHING HAS to be done about all these violations that have been going on for years. Anyone who doesnt believe that it goes on, is simply kidding themselves. Consider the case that was reported in this weeks issue of Sports Illustrated. It seems that there is a great player named Johnny Hector in Louisiana that was being recruited by most of the big time colleges. ' During the past year, more than $80,000 was paid to Utah landowners by the Division of Wildlife Resources for damages caused by deer, elk and pheasants, as compared to only $19,400 the previous year. f DECEMBER he made it known that he would attend the LSU campus to play his college football. Now the thing interesting here is that Johnny had a brother who was in prison having pleaded guilty to negligent homicide last year after a shooting in a bar. In February of this year his brother was paroled, mainly because he could tell the parole board he had a job waiting for him. The employer was a business owned by a Texas A&M alum. THESE FIGURES do not include money spent on fencing materials,, the mileage and hours of conservation officers and other necessary materials. Division big game personnel estimate the money for these spent in 1978-7- 9 items will far exceed the AS THE article stated, Whether by coincidence or not, Johnny was now leaning to playing for the Aggies. Which meant Texas A&M. Later in February a man called the parole officer and asked for the brothers phone number, which he was given. Then the . brother, William, received an $80,000 anonymous phone call saying that unless Johnny stuck to his decision and played for LSU he stood a good chance of going back to prison. are out there trying to win, giving it their best. Thats what its all about, giving it the best shot they can. Win or lose we should accept it and then maybe all these young high school athletes wont have to put up with all this bull that is going around. KEN SPENCER His Time For - BOUNTIFUL It doesnt seem possible, yet here it is already, time for high school football. ; :: - PADS AND equipment : were handed out last Saturday to all the hopefuls ; .throughout the state. This week marks the start of those great practice drills known as Hell Week. Thats the time of year every high school player ; ; r remembers until the day he dies. Those fun times when they are either practicing on the field or drilling themselves in the classroom. drills in full pads. Skull Two-a-da- y ses-- : sions. Some of the lucky ones even get three practice sessions a day. IN BETWEEN all these the players go to the things J closest house and catch any sleep and rest they can get. These drills arent that rough anymore, since they are involved in weight programs throughout the year to help keep the players in shape. The high school players of today are in much better shape when they report to Hell Week than they did a few years ago. "THAT BRINGS up the question being asked of this reporter. What about the high school teams in the area this season? Well without seeing any of them in practice yet and having only limited conversation with coaches heres a quick look at the schools. - Viewmont has probably the best talent in their camp in recent years. This years crop iiave played a lot of ball have some together. They and some backs running jjood Bf the biggest linemen in years. Coach Monte Jones ;enters his third year at the helm of the Viking ship and this could be the best. Offensively they need a strong leader at quarterback with Several candidates fighting it But. -- -- rlicking their chops.coaches BOUNTIFUL are They feel they have a top rated club this season. The Braves will always be tough and near the top with their coaching staff. They have big people for the line, a solid quarterback, good running backs and some very impressive people to' play linebackers. Woods Cross is my pick as the surprise club of the year. Many people feel with the graduation of last year the Cats will be down but they have some great personnel returning, Earnshaw, Taryn Hallows, Reed Call, Jason Whitney and many others. THE CATS are excited about their new league, which includes Bountiful and Viewmont, and the coaches report the attitude is strong. They have some talented people, dont look past them. Davis has a new coach, Ward Sawley, but that simply strengthens the Darts. They have a great quarterback to run the club, a big fullback and some quick wingbacks. Offensively they are strong, defensively they should be more than good, another good year for Davis. LAYTON LOST a lot of seniors but theyll be in the thick of the region race. Too many good coaches up there. Always will have big linemen and has some great running backs and quarterback. Theyll be tough again. Clearfield is unknown with most of their players yet Coach Brent Hancock has shown he can blend a top rated club each year no matter what he has to work. with. They have had some strong years out of their sophomore and junior classes so they have some talent, just unknown on varsity level. $SS555SS55:5SSS:S:5SSm Reckon So!
