Health and health agencies in nine other states are engaged in an intensive measles (rubeola) surveillance effort this summer. Measles is now at an all time low in the United States. As of July 28, 1979, only 11,318 cases of measles have been reported nationally. This represents nearly a 50 percent reduction in reported cases in comparison with 1978. IN 1979 the total is lower than that for any corresponding period in recorded U.S. history. This decline is continuing; only 95 cases were reported for the entire 1980. WITH THIS in mind, the summer search for measles was initiated. Many times, the girl is sent to a foster home until after the baby is born. After the birth she returns home or strikes out on her own with her new baby, Jenson said. PARENTS TEND to take over the parenting roles in their efforts to help the new mother and father. This often slows the development of parenting skills in the young couple, Jenson said. The specialist also suggested that a Dr. Spock-typ- e parenting book should be written for teenage parents. HIGH SCHOOL programs teach mostly girls about parenting skills. "We need to prepare both the boy and the girl to be parents, Jenson said. And, additionally, we need to prepare the girl with job skills and to be a single parent since many teenage marriages end in divorce. Get the stamp of success THE SPECIALIST also said that for children under three years old needs to be improved. Single mothers cant work to support their families if they dont have a place to leave their children while they are at work, he said.
