Show WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER. MAY 13, 1981 VIS Anoth 11.59; 6. Mike Riney (L), By KEITH DUNCAN CLEARFIELD 11.60. 1.600 meters John Flint says success is never certain and failure is never final. He has led his team to believe that region track championships are certainly unforgettable and cold showers for their coach afterwards are always final Joyous times prevailed vv '". s' s' ", ss sy. , " CLEARFIELD CLEARFIELD scored in every event and finally totaled up some 148 points, with the next highest point total being 63 points behind them. But the whopping margin by which Clearfield won isnt what seemed to excite the veteran track and field man. Instead he got a little emotional about some performances that will go down in his memory forever, if possible. THE CLEARFIELD medley relay team established a new region record of 3.45: 17 after a brilliant display of workman- Wright, Jimmy Phillips, Dean Fulger, Jeff Neiderhauser and Danny Barnes. Barnes just put his head down and roared along, said Flint of the medley anchor man who had been injured for the past two weeks. NEIDERHAUSER completed the 400 meter portion of the medley and gave his team their first lead in the race after jumping out ahead of his toughest competitor on the comer. won it last year and we it again, said Jeff abrecord breaking run. NEIDERHAUSER also finished fourth in the 400 meter run and competed in the second leg of the region's championship 1600 meter relay team. Flint said the 400 meter run had to be the greatest experience of his coaching career where his team placed four of the top five runners. ROBERT WILCOX nipped teammate Brian Wright at the tape for the gold medal. Neiderhauser was fourth and Bubba Conley was fifth. Wilcox said it wasnt much fun nipping one of his own teammates at the tape, but said hed do it again if he had too. I dont have much of a strategy in the 400 meter. I just stay back a ways and go after them in the end, said Wilcox who probably has one of the finest kicks of any runner in the state today. Ife, s & 1 $ ' they were sophomores till Robert Wilcox reaches the gun lap pointjust a little shy of the lead. The Falcon ace went on to win the 800 meters, the 400 meters and ran the anchor leg of the champion- ship mile relay team. ts though, who moments later would claim another first in the 800 meter run and anchor the 1600 meter relay title team. The windy, chilly conditions on Friday werent Wilcox favorite running mates so he stayed back further in the pack than he usually does. Then in the final 300 yards he put together another wild kick to win over Darin Williams of Bonneville by more than two seconds. dreth of a second in the eighth grade. WRIGHT HAS always felt hed work hard for a coach he respected and thats just how he feels about Flint. Wright weighs 103 lbs. and stands about That just about does away with football and basketball according to the Falcon speedster. He says track is where hell stay. 58. BRIAN SAYS he has always-enjoyerunning, so in order to WILCOX SAYS Weber State is where hell probably be running college track and field next year. Wilcox appears to get the most satisfaction out of the 1600 meter relay where he runs the anchor leg. Last Friday the team came of a second from breaking the school record. ANOTHER KEY member of the 1600 meter relay squad is Bubba Conley, only a sophomore and something which has Coach Flint smiling. I realize Flint is expecting a lot from me over the next two years and I'll try not to let him down, were Conleys first words. ITS GREAT running on a relay with great runners. Ive got to produce my maximum to keep my place on the relay, he said. Another workhorse on the 1600 meter team includes Brian Wright, who also finished second in the open 400 and third in the 100 meter and sixth in the 200. min-atu- re workouts pain a little. He laughs when talking about the weight conditioning course Coach Flint tryed on him. Before starting the course, Brian weighed 1 10 and the goal was to reach 125. A week into the course, Brian had lost five pounds so the course came to an abrupt stop. Wright doesnt seem bothered by the pressure others can put on athletes who performs well one year and comes back the following year to repeat and attempt to do better. Youve just got to set your goals higher, he said. MIKE FAHNERT gave Clearfield a fifth in the 1 10 high hurdles while Bill Wilcox was sixth in the 3200 meter run. These are the only two events that the Falcons wont be sending anyone to state. Darren Barker collected a fifth place in the 1600 meter run and another fifth in the 800 meters. ONE OF the nicest surprises of the day came when Todd Larsen ran to a second place in the 300 intermediate hurdles and qualified for the state finals. Tracy Pitkin was fourth and Carl Wilson gathered up sixth place. Freddie Cook couldnt quite retamper with his old school cord in the long jump but did get a fifth place in the 200 meter run. KEVIN PORTER put himself in a position to strike big at today. I've ever coached. toss of Kent 185-2- Hep-wort- h was sixth in that event. Ed Lemon pole vaulted his best jump of the year, a mark of What a super job, said Flint. ANOTHER pleasant surprise was the effort of Brad Wilkes in the discus where he broke the school record with a throw of 156--3 which was good enough for second place. Mark Carter was second and J.C. VonCollin finished fourth. 12-- 3. I was just mentally ready, said Wilkes who resembles Carter in looks and is accused often of looking like his twin brother. BEFORE THE region meet, Wilkes best toss had been 144 feet. Carter broke the region record with a 60-- A throw in the shot put. He claims he didn't stay psyched up and blamed the colder weather for a few of his problems. I SEE THIS week as the last chance Ill get to throw the shot in a Utah meet. Id really like to get it out around 62 feet, said Carter of the state meet to be held at Weber State Friday and Saturday. Carter has received invitations to perform at national track and field meets, with the most recent being an invite to the great Southwest Meet in Arizona in June. TROY NYE jumped 6 in the high jump, his best ever and only an inch from the school record. I just felt good all day, said Nye, who feels the 7 mark is still in his reach. Weve contended all year long that if anyone can break Scott Wallaces mark, it will by Nye, said Flint. 3 6-- 6-- Long jumper Jon Tisler nearly became another super hero in his own right after just barely missing out on first place in the high jump. 4 TISLER JUMPED just an eighth of an inch behind Ken Huddleston of Roy. 20-81- The Clearfield coach said hed never had a bunch of seniors perform like they did Thursday and Friday. There were so many personal bests and school records set, said Flint, What can you say more about guys like Danny Barnes, Kevin Porter, Ed Lemon, Brad Wilkes and seven-yea- . " , . 1. Todd r others. They were all so great. THE CLEARFIELD mentor went so far to say that Friday was one of the most memorable days in his sporting career. Clearfield also ran away with the title last year but many agreed that the teams Who came to Clearfield last week were much stronger overall than a year ago. THROUGH Clearfield posted only five first places of the seventeen events staged, its no secret that their unmatched depth won them their second straight crown. Its nice to have a lot of first, and we had our share, said Flint, But its always been my philosphy and will always be that the only way to win track championships consistently is to have big numbers. 200 METER Davis (R), 21.66 (new region record, previous record 10.90 set by Marvin Ellis, Bonneville, 1980); 2.
