Show I if WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, FEBRUARY 18, 1982 IS Region Action Concludes... Braves Invade Viewmont... Wildcats Wait For East... Rams Head To Dart Pit By DAVE WIGHAM Highland has better overall talent, but the Darts have Brian Taylor. Brian is the elite player in the area and will need a big effort in this game. Troy Anderson has been playing well recently and could take some of the pressure off of Brian. Call it madness or a hunch but I like the Darts in this outing, but for some reason Im going to call it Highland in a close one. Its that time of the season again when the state tournament starts to take shape. With only two league games left in Region Four things are shaping up. BOUNTIFUL has a lock on first place with an impressive 1 record which is good for a two game lead over Highland Woods Cross and Davis are fighting it out for third spot with identical 4 records. Viewmont fell behind the pack with their loss last week and stand at East sits alone on the bottom with a mark. Keep in mind four teams from this league will head into the state affair. Bountiful and Highland seem destined to be two of those clubs. That means two spots are up for grabs between Davis, Woods Cross and Viewmont. 7-- 5-- 3. CLEARFIELD at Sky View: Although the Falcons only won by two at their place, look for them to win big this time. Roy at Layton: No one can figure this Lancer club out but remember they are young. They were great against Bonneville then lost to lowly Weber. It's their turn to be up, but the Royals are just too good for them. Heres a look at the final games in region action which will take place next Tuesday night. 4-- 3-- 5. -7 BOUNTIFUL at Viewmont: A do or die for the DAVIS AT East. This one went to the wire at Kaysville before the Darts won. East will fcive the Taylor brigade all they can handle in this one and just for the record the Leopards will win. Vikes. They need to win both games in order to get back into the state tournament. 1 can think of better things to do than beat this Brave bunch. Their first meeting was a classic matchup with the Bountiful side pulling away in the end. Big John White has played extremely well in region the past five games and will probably cause the Braves problems this week. With their balance though, one has to favor the Bountiful Club. Plus, they have some added incentive in that they can win the region title outright with a win. Brian Taylor of Davis lets loose with a shot while Dan Bell of Bountiful gets a hand in his face. Brian poured in 39 points but it wasnt enough as the Braves wpn the game. raves Clinch Tie For Title With Win Over Darts... Cats Down Vikes In Close Game. everything the Braves tried By DAVE WIGHAM Bountiful BOUNTIFUL High took a piece out of the championship pie last week when they handed Davis a 2 85-7- setback on the Braves floor. THE WIN upped their record to 1 in league play and a two game lead over second place Highland. With only two games left on their schedule the Braves have earned at least a share of the title. This week when they take 7-- '"theiraet across townto-battl- e worked while Davis was trying everything they knew to slow them up. Right from the opening tipoff the Bountiful five went right at the Darts while the five from Kaysville were simply trying to stay close. THE DAVIS crew never recovered from that opening IT WAS a typical Bountiful basketball game in that they got balance at both ends of the floor. Just about anything and period. In their first meeting, which was won by the Darts, it was the game plan to clog the middle and let the Braves shoot outside. Bountiful either wouldnt or couldn't hit the shot. This time around the game plan backfired because all the Braves put the ball up, and usually down as well. job in stopping Danny Bell inside but DAVIS DID a good SERVICE Next Week Clearfield, Layton Swimming charity stripe that Brian proved deadly hitting on all 15 of his attempts. THE VICTORY throws the race for Region Ones third and fourth place spots into a heated situation. Both Clearfield and Layton are now deadlocked with 4 records with only two games remaining. Roy and Bonneville both won Tuesday night to help them advance further and secure some coveted state tournament spots. Weve got no less than a tie to get in, said Coach Craig Hansen of Clearfield about his teams chances to land a state tournament berth. If we win one more game, then well have it. 4-- IT BASICALLY boils down to Clearfield and Layton battling for the last two playoff berths. Sky View has won two games but the Bobcats chances are very slim of getting in. Clearfield has the easiest schedule of the two. The Falcons must face Roy this Friday and Sky View next Tuesday while Layton plays the leagues top two teams, Roy and Bonneville. CLEARFIELD also got some double digit scoring from Mike Rhodes 13, Jeff Schofield 11 and Brett Peterson 10 last Tuesday night in their key victory over the Lancers. Credit the Davis coaches and players though they never the game and kept on LAYTON AT Bonneville. The Lakers are still smarting over their first loss to the Lancers. Might have taken them a little lightly. This time they won't and theyll beat Layton. HIGHLAND at Davis: Good luck Rams. Not many teams have gone into the pit at Davis and come out winners, in fact only Woods Cross has been able to led the Darts in scoring, pouring in 39 points despite having an off first half. It was from the the Darts adding Roy at Clearfield: Turn out the lights, the party's over for the Falcons. That seems to be the feeling around the league, but I look for Coach Craig Hansen to weave some magic and the Clearfield bunch w ill win this outing. EVER SINCE the Weber game, weve been getting better and better, said Hansen, We started off terrible against Bonneville last week, but later in that game we started to play much better. The Falcons and the Lancers were deadlocked at 17 a piece after one quarter but thats when Moosmann went to work and Clearfield pulled away. It was Rhodes sharp shooting and Wilsons steady foul shooting in the end that lifted Clearfield past the Lancers. For Layton, Keith Williams led their attack with a game high of 20 points while another junior, Jeff Mooli contributed his season best of 18 points. WILLIAMS didnt take us apart like he did in our first game with Layton. We chanced our defensive assignments and put Schofield on Williams which was one of the keys to victory, said Hansen. There is no question that we are getting better and better, said Hansen, The kids are putting the entire game together. The guards are playing together with the bigger people and needed to win. thats what we IF CLEARFIELD or Layton does make the 1982 playoffs, then they will play the elite of the Region Four in the first round of the state tournament. It appears that Bountiful will wrap up that league while Highland is going to finish second. Thats what happened last week when the Woods Cross club knocked off Viewmont in region action. 6 67-5- THE WILDCATS opened the game with their three big people, Richard Johnson, Bruce Bishop and Greg , Housekeeper, with the intentions of working the ball inside Jo them. With just over four minutes gone in the period though, Housekeeper was called for his asecond personal foul. At that time Coach Wayne Baker inserted Race McCleery and the Cats went with three outside people. Up until that moment the game was pretty even, the Vikes were also going inside to their big people. But then the outside began to open up and Greg Guit went wild and got hot to give the Cats a 17-- 7 lead at the end of the first quarter. VIEWMONT CAME right back and scored the first six points of the second period to pull right back into the game. The two sides then traded buckets for awhile before the Cats changed the complexion of the contest. Woods Cross decided to go into their deliberate spread type offense and held on to the ball and went for the last shot of the half. Matt Johnson hit Murray 261 264 262 266 263 268 the shot to give the home team a six point advantage at halftime. JOHN WHITE got things started in the second half when he went in for a Doctor J. type dunk shot right from the tipoff. Again the Cats were deliberate Midvale on offense, although, they were looking for the shots rather than just sitting on the ball. V 254 255 566 561 572 571 942 943 |
