Show I JJiBRUARY 23, 1983 WOMENS BASKETBALL Queens Of Classroom And Court By KEITH DUNCAN WE START later than most other schools in basketball. As long as the girls are conditioning themselves for the season in things like tennis, cross country and volleyball, we dont Journal Sports LAYTON - What a comeback folks! n scheplace much emphasis on the dule. We drill in funumentals very early and play good tough competition to toughen us up for league. We like lots of road games, just about anything to make it super competitive for us. BRENT CHECKETTS and his Lady Lancers have made a mean commitment to win the 1982-8- 3 womens Region One basketball championship. They could have fooled anyone in the opening quarters of the schedule, but after a tear of consecutive victories, others would be fools not to take them serious. But Checketts is the first to admit that his teams over the past two years, have been slow starters to begin with. they can lead classroom as well as on the basketball court. j , tt KATHY BLANKEN is the sixth senior and the first off the bench most of the time. "Nobody wants to improve more than Kathy." said the coach. Another member of the squad, a junior, has been Julie Nelson. This 0 player has a feel for the basketball, probably being one of the better rebounders on the team. AND CHECKETTS is the kind of coach that knows too much practice and drive in the latter part of the season, makes for a stale show. We dont mind giving the kids some time off, theyve worked hard for it, he said. 6-- Who makes up the Lady Lancer unit? Checketts described each one of his mainstay players beginning with Joyce Helton. This extremely positive senior started last season for Layton and probably is the player that holds the fort together in time of crisis or panic. THE KIDS are academically oriented as well as being good basketball players. We expect them to be leaders in the classroom which nearly always spills something positive into the athletic side of things, said Checketts. Any team that reels off the kind of winning streak these Layton gals have, must know the meaning of discipline, hard work and sacrifice. Checketts had nothing but praise for the players in these areas. in the MELBA TYSON is the floor general, the quarterback of the team according to Checketts. Melba, along with most of her senior counterparts, started for Brent last year. Her 'speed on defense and offense has been one big reason to call her the catlyst of the club too. Tona Stone is also blessed with plenty of skill when it comes time put the ball in the hole. "When she is on, she can shoot the eyes out of the basket, said Checketts. havent been, taking anyone lightly. I honestly believe that from top to bottom, week in and week out, that this region (Region One) is the toughest league in the state, Checketts continued to say. Even outside their league, Checketts says the women respect the likes of teams like Davis and Highland. WEVE GOT A pretty intelligent bunch said the second year head coach. They knew when it became time to get serious. Maybe a continuous attitude of that sort will carry them through a successful state tournament coming up real soon. When Checketts says his gals arent dumb, but rather intelligent, he was speaking the literal truth. The six Layton girls who are seniors on the club average at least a 3.5 grade point average. have proven Layton s six lady Lancer basketball players pre-seao- EVEN WHEN the league starts, I like the girls to respect the league. We dont want, and here, j Her inside shooting ability will cause Checketts to direct many of the passes in her area, especially when the Lancers need some power moves deep inside the key. Angie Gibby may be the purest shooter on the team with excellent court sense and balance at all times. In league she has played just about every position, being probably the most difersified player on the club. SOME OTHER juniors that have come off the bench to help Layton make an all out run for the league title have been Liz Manis and Carnella Meyers. Its a very serious subject when you bring up topics such as a region championship to these gals. Its almost like they were bred to win it. is Kim Meyers, a THE OTHER player and an excellent rebounder. power-typ- e I Largest Gathering Ever ni Hkb'HIfICniWHIV im&mEr&iflii 38 kuuiket QUICK CHARGE ENTRY L0CKSET TWO SPEED REVERSING )88 CORDLESS DRILL By GARY R. BLODGETT BOUNTIFUL - Doug Friedl, of Clinton, was the overall winner of the 1983 Bountiful Area Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Presidents Day Race Monday in Bountiful. RUNNING AS an independent, Doug broke away from the pack of more than 400 participants to finish the race in a sparkling time of 13 minutes 22 seconds 19 seconds ahead of running mate Dan Price, of Bountiful. - Runners, from about age 8 to about 65, covered the (3.1 mile) course under clear skies and chilly, but pleasant weather. Nearly all of the participants who started the race finished, according to race officials. 500-met- er DOUG AND Dan were running stride for stride through the middle of the race when Doug decided he had to make the kick early because Dan has a strong finish. I tried to keep pace with him, but I had a stomach pain and just couldnt keep up the faster stride, said Dan. I guess I wasnt in shape for this one. DOUG COMMENTED that he and Dan have been "running mates at Weber State We know what the College. other can do and I knew I had to kick out early to win. Dan has too much of a finish for me unless I can get a good lead. So f thats what I did.
