DeeRees CHRISTENSEN, radar chief at Francis Peak, notes that the traffic has been on the increase for several years and that almost every day generates a close call between a technician going to or from the high site and a private vehicle. Although this used to be a summer problem only, it is now just as bad in the winter due to the many small snowmobiles owned by local residents. In all cases, excessive speed around blind ByDAVEWIGHAM Usually this reporter stays away from the national sports scene but there have been a few things about the major league baseball season that has me thinking. THE RACES in each division are great, especially with the new teams. Hate to see the same clubs in the playoffs year after year. National League East has five teams fighting it out for the pennant, only the Mets are out of it. Anyone but Philly would be fine with me. In the West a three-tearace is shaping up, just hope those Reds arent the winners. In the American West it would be great to see the Angels make the big time once although those three other clubs aren't going to hand it to them. BEING A DIE hard Yankee fan, the American East is hard to write about. A year ago the Yanks pulled off a miracle but that was when they were only chasing one club. This year they are behind three of them and chances are all three wont slump. It would be nice to see the Brewers in there. Everyone is asking what about the Dodgers? You dont get rid of a Tommy John and expect to be as good as the year before. Then too Rau has been hurt most of the year. . .. Theyll be back but not this year. TELEVISION PLAYS a big part in the presentation of major league baseball and you would think ABC would leave Cosell at home. This guy is great remembering facts and figures, but he knows about as much about the actual game of baseball as I do lacrosse. - He becomes a cheerleader for certain players he likes and is brutal to those he doesnt. Two weeks ago with the California Angels on he was brutal to Dickie Thon at second, yet was impressed with the glove of Willie Aikens at first. Aikens can hit the ball, but hell never be a good fielder. Thon is a good fielder. curves causes the near misses. . W , HE ALWAYS seems to have a favorite and a dart board to throw insults at. He wouldnt know a good play if it bit him on the nose. Then too he comes up with great ideas like, he went with the pitch. Anytime a hitter goes to the opposite field to Howard he simply went with the pitch. Bull, with Nolan Ryan on the mound those hitters are plain and IN CLOSING, heres the greatest quote in years. Graig Nettles, the third baseman of the Yankees when asked about playing for the Yanks, Some kids when theyre younger dream of growing up and playing professional baseball. Others dream of running away and joining the circus. Im lucky--1 got to do both. Howard Cosell makes the big league a circus. (Federal Refuges conservationist IN 1903, Pres. Theodore Roosevelt issued an executive order, seemingly insignificant at the time, which made the Federal Government responsible for providing refuge for the brown pelican. The order set aside Pelican Island, a 2'2 acre tract on the east coast of Florida, as a bird sanctuary. ; Today, there are nearly 400 refuges in the United States. Utah has three, and they provide recreational opportunities for thousands each year. : BEAR RIVER Migratory Bird Refuge: Established in 1928, this 65, refuge is one of the outstanding water-foareas in North America. It serves as a resting and feeding area for vast flocks of 000-acr- e migrating waterfowl that pass through the Great Salt Lake Valley. The refuge produces about ducks and 20,000 1,500 Canada geese annually and hosts whistling swans during migration. So Howard please stick to your facts and figures about all those guys you saw play in 1890. Its obvious you dont know the game well enough to speak about it. .S', IF YOU drive the canyon, please use caution. Never exceed the posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour. If you cant see around a curve, slow down to five or ten miles per hour and stay close to your side of the road. Snowmobile drivers should be aware that it takes a long distance to stop a vehicle which is moving down the canyon in the winter and that the FAA uses a large rotary snow blower on the top half of the road, a machine which could injest a snowmobile before it could be shut down. Once fish are spooked, chances of catching a fish ere diminished considerably. ' , IT SOUNDS as though several dozen fishermen have listened to veteran fishermen and are now trying their luck on some of Davis Counties seldom fished creeks which kipeander through backyards. Creeks such as Mill, Holbrook and Baer (Haight) have been producing limits of ' 8 to 10 inch rainbow cutthroat hybrid trout to fishermen willing to brave the brush and rocks and hike up the canyons a little. These streams are seldom fished and trout are abundant but easily spooked by the unwary fisherman. Worms and red salmon eggs have worked best. : SOON THE French and Dutch played a game in which the ball, struck by a club, was aimed at an upright marker. This game is where we get the word golf, which comes from the Dutch word kolf meaning club. The Scots were the first to use the hole in the ground method rather than the upright markers that had been used up until that time. THE GAME really caught on in Scotland, so much in fact that in 1457 King James II put a ban on the game because he felt the Scots were being distracted from the practice of archery which was their main mode of defense in those days. Times havent wives think the changed from distracts game everything around the house. The first golf club in history was founded in 1754 in Scotland, and to this day is still called St. Andrews Royal and Ancient Golf Club. Since its origin this club has ruled and governed the game until this day. TO SHOW its influence on the game, consider the fact that in the middle of the 18th Century golf courses had no set numbers of holes. Some courses had as few as five holes while others played with of the world followed. In the early days golf was played with leather balls filled with feathers. Those balls were so expensive that only the rich could afford to play. Another early ball was made from the gum of trees. IT WASNT until 1901 that the less expensive rubber golf balls were introduced to the public, and at this point golf became reachable financially to almost everyone. The sport became popular in America in the late 19th Century when John G. Reid, a transplanted Scot living in New York, and four others organized and founded the first golf club. They too called it St. Andrews. It was a tiny e course in a cow pas- pearance and the imwim HOLMES Reservoir in East Layton has continually produced bluegill, crappie, and largemouth bass. Fish can always be seen from the shore but few anglers know what to use on the hidden reservoir. Plastic or whole worms work best for the bass. Small pieces of worm, wet flies, or small spinners work well on the bluegill and crappie. Early morning and late in the evening is the best time to fish this seldom fished reservoir.
