B if I DONALD F. DeWitt, justice of the peace, asked the council to consider a monthly salary of $200. This would be based on services rendered, professionalism and availibility, not on hours spent on the job. The council had previously decided $150 was an adequate justice of the peace salary. A compromise was reached when Councilman Scheel proposed the salary be $150 per month and then reviewed the case load and the performance of the justice of the peace in six months to see if a raise in pay to $200 was justifiable. MAYOR K. Delyn Yeates had asked the council prior to the June 24 meeting to consider raising his pay from $80 per month to a high figure to help defray the expenses he has incurred while being mayor and to more adequately compensate him for the time he spends at the job of being mayor. Councilman Nalder made a motion to raise the mayors salary to $120 a month. After some discussion, Councilman Scheel pointed out to the other council members that the average salary for a mayor in Davis County was $145 per month and the average salary for a mayor of a city the size of East Layton was only $92 per month. THE COUNCIL then voted to raise the mayors salary to $90 per month which would bring East Layton mayors salary in line with the salaries of other mayors of cities comparable in size to East Layton. The council voted to pay City Recorder Deane Rigby M5 per month for performing the duties of court clerk. ALL THREE salaries will be finalized at a public hearing to be held July 8. The council discussed withdrawing money from the utility fund and transferring it into the public works fund. The money would be used for curb and gutter and sidewalks along Cherry Lane. PLANS ARE now being made to create a special improvement district to pay for curb, guttering and sidewalks along Rainbow Drive. It is the desire of the council and of East Layton residents to get curb, guttering and sidewalks along Cherry Lane and along Rainbow Drive before school starts so the elementary school children can walk to and from school safely.
