The Vikings came through the losers bracket to beat Davis twice in the finals ho claim the title. THIS LEAGUE was created this past year in an effort to get more players from the high school club involved. Sophomores were still involved with the Automotive team while graduating seniors were playing American Legion. Those players that will be juniors and seniors this coming year then participated in this new league. Woods Cross won the league title but then lost out to the Vikings in the year end double elimination both Curtis Holt, who was used sparingly this past season at Viewmont, got all the time he needed to pitch and he took the opportunity to show that he plans to be one of the best next season at school. 11-- Offensively Mike Ellis, Mike Cook, Kyle Morrell, Grant Hepworth, Chet Goodwin, Jeff Porter, Larry Smith, Guy Zwahlen and Scott Kjar were impressive. Porter had 7 RBLs including a grand slam in the first game. 1 1 struck out 18 batters while Kayviiie Man Arraigned Mon throwing a total of 138 pitches. With politics though you get no choice. All three major networks cover the conventions from start to finish, and many times the same camera seems to be in use. Then they actually get a feeling of pow c w hen after we have listened to politicians they seem to think they should spend the next half an hour telling us what they said. This way they make a fifteen minute speech by the President into a hour long special. WHY DONT the parties involved let the networks bid on their conventions, go w ith the top bidder and make some money for their respective parties. Seems to work in Football, baseball and basketball. No one is saying that the conventions are a waste of time, although they do have some strong points in their favor. But at least give the viewers an alternative like they do with the big sporting events. NETWORKS ARE always fighting for the ratings that seem allmighty to them. Tell me w hat would get the highest rating, a political convention or a good movie on another channel. Come to think of it what would get the highest of a bad movie and the convention? Covering these major speeches is good, but for heavens sake lets dont use all three networks to do it. What It Takes To Play High School Football By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL All around the state this week the sound of helmets hitting each other can be heard as practice sessions in full gear have been given the green light. the official beginning of high school football in the county but you better believe it isn't the start of the hard work these youngsters put into represent their school on the field. MONDAY MARKED Few people realize the sacrifice and dedication that those athletes you watch every Friday in the fall put in during the summer months. Preparing for that opening Monday date took five weeks of weight training sessions. EACH SCHOOL has their own special program that they offer not only their football players but any student at the school that wishes to improve their physical abilities. One mustn't try to fool themselves though as you have to remember these programs are set up for the football players. These sessions, which usually take about two hours a day, are offered both in the morning and evening to accommodate work schedules. These youngsters usually leave these sessions tired so the majority go after work to the evening session. INVOLVED is a lot of weight work and just as much running, either for distance or speed. While in the weight room these players hit the bench press, squats, military press, lats, leg machines over and over again. When this is over they hit the Universal machine and the instructors put them through what is known as a circuit. This involves going to various stations and working hard for a minute then taking a ten second break before moving onto the next of ten stations. THESE STATIONS include bar dips, situps, bench press. pullups, military press, curls, jumping rope and stepups. They go through the circuit three times. After all the work with the weights the fun begins as the players head to the field for their various running drills. Depending on the coach they could be running ten yard sprints, s, ladders where the sprints get longer each time, up a hill or the now famous sprint laps where they have a certain amount of time to run around the two goalposts. If they want to get mean they go throw in a mile or two. EACH PLAYER has put in at least a couple of hours a day for the past five weeks, which is really a conservative estimate. That makes over 50 hours done before the equipment has ever been handed out. So when the season opens up in a couple of weeks you'll have a better understanding of just what these players have gone through.
