Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, JANUARY 31,1980 mmir COME ON folks, these By DAVE WIGHAM LAYTON HAS proved to be tough at home, and they'll be even tougher in the second go round. They might have surprised Roy in the first game but the Royals will be ready for action. Up to now the Royals were still looking for their first league win. It won't come easy at Layton and probably won't come at all. Lan- cer roundballers are for real. Sure they had a poor start but very few of them had played varsity basketball before this season. Besides who really cares what a team's preseason record is? Those games don't have anything to do with deciding which clubs will be in To Address Honor Banquet the state tournament come March. So for once and for all let's get it out of our systems about calling their wins such things as surprising, upsets. For heavens sake these guys are the leaders, when they lose then it could be termed an upset. Time is rapidly approaching for the Meet Marc Wilson Night at Bountiful High School. This event will honor the Bountiful High Class 3A State Football Champions. A Japanese dinner will also be served at this gala occasion. THE PROGRAM will start promptly at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Bountiful High School. Admission is by ticket only and tickets can be purchased at all real estate offices in the Bountiful area or from Bountiful High for $3 per person. Doug Moon, had expressed the feelings that he thought this would be a fun year because he would have to do some good coaching. Well fbach. stand up and take a tT)ow. And hit they did last week in handing Box Elder their first league loss as seniors Jeff Emery and Pat McGill found the hot hands finishing with 23 and 24 points respectively. In the first half it was the shooting of McGill that kept the Darts in the contest as he finished the first sixteen minutes with 20 points. Emery picked up in the second half giving the Kaysville five a great one-tw- o punch. THE LOGAN win was a pretty one but it was a win nevertheless as both the Grizzlies and Bears found themselves at the foul line more than either one wanted to be. Before it was all over the Logan crew had made 24 shots out of 36 attempts, while the DAVIS meanwhile simply plugs along getting good hustling play from their players. Picked by some to finish in the bottom half of the region, lack of height, being the reason, the Darts have picked and clawed their way to the top half. This game marks the conclusion of the first half of the league schedule and with three away games in the second go round the Darts need all the home wins they can get. A win in this outing, and it should come, would give them a 1 record and one game behind Ogden and get them mentally ready for the second half. 4-- For further information contact Headquarters in Farming-to2 or have won two straight and come into town with some re-- . venge. He was in foul trouble all day against South and they missed him under the basket. On the guard line the Rams feature two more of Coach Larry Maxwell's sons and both of them can shoot. THIS GAME has special meaning for Scot Barlow of the Vikings since his father is a coach and he has a younger brother playing for the Highland club. A Viking win would put them in the driver's seat for the second half of the year, even a loss wouldn't kill their hopes too much. Following the Friday game the Vikes face a Tuesday encounter with South, a club they had little trouble with at home in the first meeting. As one person noted. Then as Mrs. Allen pointed out some schools in the district aren't big enough to hold a ninth grade system. Woods Cross High was the example she used noting the school wasn't built for the number of students that it would have to house if this issue were to go through. IT SEEMS some of the school snow werent built to hold Square Off On paper KAYSVILLE this game looks like a mismatch. Afterall you have a team that is 1 in league play and coming off an impressive win over previously unbeaten Box Elder against a club that is coming off a win over the only winlcss club left in the league. KEEP IN mind though the two clubs involved are Logan and Davis, and when these two clubs get together for any kind of athletic event things start to happen. For years these two have battled each other down to the wire for region crowns and even some state titles. Just because the Grizzlies have only one win in league play doesn't mean a thing. Neither do the three wins for the Darts. This one is one game that the old cliche of throw out the records applies. Season In April SHE WAS in favor of looking into the possibility of having the Utah High School Activities Association rule on the ninth graders being able to participate for the high school in which boundary they live. Since the junior high athletic programs are being dissolved then it would seem natural to let these athletes compete somewhere, and since other schools use ninth graders in their programs why not let these students. So the bottom line is that it appears to be too late for the change to take place this year but at least the seed has been planted. Mrs. Allen is going to pursue the other issue about ninth graders playing with the High School Association. year. n Bv DAVE WIGHAM THE ROYALS come into the game following a one point loss to Bonneville last week : IT WAS gratifying to see a member of the board take the time to talk about the issue. She presented some interesting facts about the idea of moving the ninth grade into the high school situation. First point and a good one, was the timing is not right for the move to take place next school year. It seems the pupils register for the following school year sometime in January so they wouldn't be able to pull off the move next school ! Roy to start the second half of the league action. It was only a month ago that the Layton team got hot and started winning with a victory on the road against Roy. Gulls To Open as many as they are either. Mrs. Allen has noted that she will look into the long range effect of moving the ninth up and in turn moving the sixth to the junior high program. After all whats best for the students is what were after. Hate to keep harping on the same subject but a nice lady from the Davis School Board by the name of Sheryl Allen called me on this ninth grade subject. cers problems. He has been getting better every game and he poured in 18 points last week. Bert Rich and Dennis Adams give the Royals a good tandem at the guard line and they are good shooters. LAYTON One could forgive the fans around the state for taking the first couple of wins by Layton as upsets. But for four weeks now the Lancers have been winning in their league and the surprising thing is that some people are still surprised when they win. 31,1980 The Seed Has Been Planted On The Ninth Grade Subject Layton Seeks Another Win Over Roy By DAVE VVIGHAM NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JANUARY DAVIS COUNTY'S i LARGEST CARrtT A FURNITURE CLEANERS PHONE 773-500- 0 7661 870 363-261- 5 BOUNTIFUL CUSTOMERS WEE ESTMNATES - NeatDutton-holes- ?
