GOING INTO the games this week the Falcons are cur- rently in lourth place, one game behind the Sky View club, with a record. This is where the Layton team comes into play since they host the Bobcats this week. A Clearfield win coupled with a Sky View loss would move the Falcons up in the standings. It would hurt the Lancers to win either since thev are chasing Weber. It was those Bobcats that beat Cleat field last week on the Falcon floor as Sky View came up nine points ahead of their hosts. I hey did it by shooting over sixty percent from the floor to w in. basically they broke the Falcon press and had several easy layups to shoot that high of a percentage. 5 AGAIN AS has been the case in many high school games this season, the difference was at the foul line where the Bobcats converted on 19 of 28 while the home team only got to the line a total of 16 limes. Heading the Clearfield charge this past week was senior Scott Wallace who had a good game scoring 18 and battling the bigger Bobcats on the boards all night. Consistent Brook Hicks ended with the evening. 14 on Hill AFB ' a. which is working the ball around and finding the open man for the good shot. The Falcons are rich in tradition and its been a long time since a Clearfield team has finished below .500 in league action and they aren't about to drop to that this season. IT LOOKS like the Falcons the state meet again this season but they still want to finish as high as they can in region action. Pride is a big word at the school. will be in Youth y when teams get in trouble the best solution to the problem is punt. It looks like this is what was on the mind of Reed Call of Woods Cross as he battles Paul Hansen ot Viewmont fora relround in the game last week won by the Vikings. PUNT . . Wildcats vs. West WOODS CROSS -N- either club will be going to the state basketball tournament this year but both have a lot of pride going for them this week when the Wildcats battle West in the last game of the season for both clubs. BY VIRTUE of their loss to Bountiful last week the Panthers were eliminated from post season consideration while the Wildcats lost yet another to Viewmont. The Cats got behind early in the Viking loss, then fought their way back into the contest to take the lead into the fourth and final period only to see the Vikings rally for the win. This game showed some folks the heart-break- 1 difference between the top spot and one of not getting a state bid. There wasnt much difference in the game. THE ENTIRE season has been one of frustration for Coach Wayne Baker and his club. They have lost more close games this season than some coaches do in a lifetime. A couple of buckets here and there and the Wildcats would have been right in the thick of the championship battle. West also dropped a couple of close games in particular to the league leaders Bountiful and Viewmont. The Braves won the first game by a couple of points and Viewmont won their first meeting in Sports Quiz How many times did Sandy Koufax win the Cy Young award? 2. One of the biggest problems in not going to the state tournament is the fact that fans around the state wont get to see the talent that some of these players have. Its a shame people dont get to see the work of Mark Eamshaw, who scored 19 against Viewmont last week. Wall Street Journal Tell-Tal- -- e Lancers To Battle Sltyview hud pulled off four straight region wins. These athletes dont By DAVE WIGHAM True the LanLAYTON cers lost their share of first place in region warfare last week with the loss to Weber hold grudges, they simply like to get even with most folks. THE MALN problem facing Layton when they play the Sky View crew is the size under the bucket where the Bobcats enjoy a great edge. Jay Bair and Jon McKenna give the Cache Valley crew a great one-tw- o punch under the boards as they battle with anyone in the rebounding aspect of the game. Then too theres the play of guard Eddie Benson who has been on a scoring spree the past few games, he got 21 last week in their win over Clearfield. Sky View likes to play a very tough and tight man for man defense which will pit their size against the speed and but with one game remaining this week the Layton team still has a shot at a share of the championship. THIS WEEK the Lancers will host the Sky View club while Weber will tangle with the up and down Bonneville team in the final game for all teams. A Layton win coupled with a Weber loss would put the two teams back in a tie again. Bonneville certainly has the manpower to defeat the Warriors and theres no doubt that the Layton crew has the talent to knock off the Bobcats. clasTHE LAYTON-Websic last week was a typical up and down high school type of ballgame. One team would get hot and pull away and just when they looked like they would make a lugger out of the contest the other club would get hot and stage a comeback. Twice the Warriors broke away in the first half only to see the Lancers fight and claw their way back into the contest as each club experienced hot and cold spells. It seemed like the Layton five were fighting their way back ail night but when they had the chance to tie or take the lead they just couldnt get over the hump. SENIORS MARK Lee and Dave Burke led the Lancer charge again as they have ail season. Mark was awesome inside connecting for 20 points quickness of the Lancers. Mark Lee is much quicker than the Bobcats and should enjoy a good scoring night. Burke is also faster than anyone in a Sky View uniform which will be a plus for Layton. THE KEY to the matchup then is the quickness of the Lancers and then their ability to stop the inside power game of the Bobcats. Then if Bonneville lends a helping hand the Layton bunch could claim a share of the title. Feb. They did just that then things will have to , f' ' THIS WEEKS confrontation with Roy is a good matchup for the Clearfield five. The Royals come into the contest off a great win over Bonneville. This was only the second league win for the youthful Royals who start two sophomores. Big man for the Royals has been 6' 8 Robb Thomas, so the Lakers decided to take THAT PRESENTS a problem for Coach Craig Hansen who must now decide which defense to utilize. In past weeks the game plan was to always zone the Roy club and take away the inside game but if the guards are getting hot from the outside like last week ' 40and then last week the Highland club won by 20. Bright spot in the Cub camp is the play of guard Doug Tonge who is a good outside shooter. Inside they look to senior Dave Alley who can be tough when he gels rolling. With nothing at stake for the Cubs they could be as loose as a goose and get going. Bountiful is in the tournament. Short and simple.
