Square Off Friday By DAVE WIGHAM Bountiful BOUNTIFUL football Coach Paul Waite has only seen Fred Cook of Clearfield on video tape. Wait till the guy sees this runner in person. Cook led his Falcons to a win over Viewmont last week and is establishing himself as one of the best backs in the state. COOK RUSHED for over 100 yards in the Viking win, including a touchdown run of about 50 yards. People knew he could fly but no one realized until last week that he can also run over people with power. Some noted that he reminded them of Maurice Turner who is n,ow with Utah State. Fred wasn't alone in his heroics, although he does stand out, as Milt Hill showed poise at quarterback and Bill Kelly ran well in the backfield with Cook. Up front, and on defense, the Falcons looked to Mark Carter, Eric Naylor and Kevin Porter all of whom played extremely well in their opening win. BOUNTIFUL wasnt as fortunate as the Falcons as the Braves lost late in the contest to a very good Roy club We played well again? Roy, noted Coach Waite. You could say we won all the battles but then lost the war. Those battled include holding the Royals to just two first downs until the final minute o 13-- play, the Bountiful defense held Roy to just 20 yards rushing all evening. Being the defending champions the kids felt a lot of pressure on them," he wen on. We eliminate a couple of mistakes and well be tough. THE BRAVES came out of the contest with a couple of injuries though that might hurt them in the long run. Junior quarterback Phillip Schmutz went down with a shoulder injury that will sideline him for the most part of the season. Senior quarterback Craig Tingey was hit in the hip and was limping but they expect him to play this week. Bountifuls running game was effective as junior Rob Egget and senior Rob Allred both drew praise from their coach for their efforts on the night. Egget is strong and blocks well while Allred just keeps improving and running well for us. In the passing department the Braves hit on 10 of 23 attempts with big tightend Mike Woodbury catching seven of them. DEFENSIVELY both clubs like to get after it. Clearfield came up with the big plays when they needed them, like both times the Vikes went for the two point conversions. Bountiful has long been known for their defensive teams. Carl Wilkes, Chad Stapley, Alan Schwabb, Mike Woodbury and Alan Meldrum all drew praise from their coach for defense a week ago while Mark Cater, Maylor and Por- ter were strong for the Falcons. BOUNTIFUL HAS won the previous meetings between these two schools in the past recent years but this year the Clearfield bunch has some great players to cope with. Cook is as fine a runner as youll want to see this season and Kelley can kill teams that spend too much attention to Freddie. Bountiful has talent of their own though and if Tingey can develop as their quarterback like his coaches think he can then the Braves will be in the thick of any game they play., SHOULD BE a classic matchup, probably the best game in the area this week. Clearfield wants to show last week was no fluke and that they are a strong contender while the Braves want to get into the win column. r ,j ' , ,'v f . ' IV i , ' 1 , c x: ; ' a Ijytons Brian Murray u '' ' ' , (42) BUT THEN when you consider the tradition and reputation that Coach Hansen and his Lancer teams have built up throughout (he years its easy to see why these big boys want to play them. WilltlcaiSs Eye point in the season is a little experience under thei belts, WOODS CROSS When you consider that the Wildcats have Kevin Nitzell at quarterback and then that Jordan put the ball in the air a total of 28 times last week one can expect to see the football thrown a lot Cats. schools face each other at Nitzell can throw the football when he has time and its up to the likes of Ron Jensen, Harold Donaldson, Sam Sam Russell and David Jensen to give him that time. Then too, Wes Johnson and Doyle Hauter have to catch the ball, which they showed they could last week. Jordan. NITZELL HAS been Hol-gree- n, heralded as one of the top passers in the area and last week he showed he can put the ball on the money. Jordan Coach Rick Bojak feels that in senior Jeff McFarlane he too has a great passer. JORDAN LOOKS for the ball to be thrown on them by the Cats. "Our strength on defense is in the secondary, so it "He hit on 50 percent against Alta last week. He throws well and only needs experience to get better, noted Bojak who is in his first year as head coach for Jordan after a stint as an assistant to Steve Dangerfield at Brighton High. Layton started off the year last week with a defeat to the Capital team out of Idaho. One must remember though that the Idaho club was a veteran team with many returning from the runner-u-p club of a year ago and they are one of (he top favorites to win the title this season. THEN TOO remember this Jordan one has to rememver that most of these folks saw very little if any action last year on the varsity level. The line especially needs to gain experience as they could very well be the key to the entire season for the this Friday when the two Golf v', ' team-mat- topH-- d laitom Boety For Skyline preseason schedule. Linebacker Mark Wickel is also a good one who won an award at Utah State this summer in a football camp. If anything the Cats showed their youth and inexperience against the Cyprus club and one can look for them to improve with each outing simply because of that experience factor. They have some talent, no doubt about it. NOW THEY just have to mature as a team, only time can do that. Jordan wants to give their new coach a win, so both clubs want the victory. goes. THESE LANCERS have pride in their football tradition not to mention a lot of talent. Take people like Steve Lance Brightshue, Brian Murray, Rich Ipaktchiun and James Suitt and you have the makings of a good football team. Kit-trc- ll. Offensively the Lancers look to senior quarterback Todd Vought to lead them with running backs Brian Murray and Keith Wilson delivering the mail. When the ball goes in the air tightend Mike Adams, wingback Kurt Mockli and receiver Stuart Rosenlund are on the receiving end. UP FRONT the Layton team can matchup with anyone, Jaime Oli veras and Jeff Davies hold down the guard spots with Brightshue and Suitt at the tackles. Rich Ipaktchian anchors the line at the center position. These five have the size and quickness, strength is a big asset, to battle any front five in the state. All they need right now is playing time together and some varsity ex BRIAN MURRAY, Steve Kittrell and Mike Adams add their names to the long list of excellent linebackers that the school has produced over the years. In the secondary the Lancers look to Mike Bunting, Alan Gentry, John Lynch and Kurt Mockli to pick off some opponents passes. IF YOU recall a year ago the Lancers were beaten badly by Skyline in a preseason game and we all know what type of season the Layton club went on to have after that. Capital had 18 players returning from last year, that gives them a ddefinite edge on opening game. This week Layton battles Skyline on the Eagles home field at 4 p.m. Skyline is under a new head coach and a new system. Last week they lost to Brighton, next weeks oppoBoth nent for Layton, these teams dont like to lose football games and will be going full out for the win this week. 7-- 3.
